The hilarious and loveable Davenport family return in this laugh-out-loud novel

Product Description

IT'S THE CELEBRITY WEDDING OF THE YEAR AND EVERYONE'S INVITED!

Portia Davenport is officially the luckiest woman in the world. She and her drop-dead gorgeous husband, Andrew, have just finished ploughing a fortune into renovating her ancestral home, Davenport Hall, and are now planning to unveil it as one of the most fabulous, luxurious, five-star country house hotels in Kildare....

But life never turns out like you think, and no sooner has the red ribbon been cut at the grand opening party, than Andrew is jetting off to New York, back to his old job, old apartment, old friends and Portia very much fears, his bachelor ways.....

And so the smooth running of Davenport Hall is entrusted to her beautiful younger sister, Daisy, which is a bit like leaving Country Barbie in charge of the United Nations. Especially as Eleanor Armstrong, daughter of the Irish President has chosen the Hall as the perfect backdrop for her society wedding to footballing legend, Oldcastle United's star striker and general all-round sex god, Mark Lloyd...

Meanwhile, in Manhattan, Portia meets Lynn Fairweather, a single woman who's looking for Mr Right in much the same way that Scott was looking for the Antarctic. And if he just happens to be married to Portia, then that's her problem...

And what is that smell coming from the cowsheds???

I found this book difficult after the first page. Like a lot of new chick-lit writers she is really trying to put in as much content into her sentences with the result that they are excessively wordy and start to drive you nuts after a while.

The "steaming mugs of tea" gives it away right from page one. It reminded me of Enid Blyton serving up "steaming mugs of cocoa". A bit cliched really! We'll be served "lashings of ginger beer" in the next one. Other offerings include "tripping down stone steps", "squealing like schoolgirls" and other metaphors which distract you from the dialogue rather than enhance it. If you can get over the cliched, excessivly descriptive sentences, then it might be a good read.

A great read. 21 Aug 2006

Very chick lit, but a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and was engrossed from the beginning. The events in the book were funny and interesting without being to unbelievable. At times the book was a little predictable, but this didn't remove the enjoyment of the book.

All in all a great read - super for taking on holiday or if you fancy a bit of chick lit!

Determinedly cheerful 13 Jun 2006
By Reptile
Format:Paperback
This book is a sequel, which I hadn't realised before I read it, but it is easy to understand without having read the first book. The writing is very forced, as if the author is constantly thinking, 'What can I put in that would be funny?' Her flippant approach to the death of one of the characters jarred on me. There are some humorous passages, but the book needs to be funnier than it is to make up for the lack of realism. For example, it is hard to believe that a corporate lawyer would favour leaving his inexperienced sister-in-law in charge of the hall after having sunk a lot of money in it. Some characters, especially the mother, Lucasta, are stereotypes. At the end, the book just fizzles out. The writer may be preparing for a third book in the series, but I won't be reading it.
