Last Night 1994 23 April 2009
I was at this concert with a friend from Liverpool
so can confirm that this CD is an excellent record of
a fabulous occasion!

Sir Henry Wood's arrangement of Bach's Toccata and Fugue
in D minor is decidedly NOT for purists - but it's
tremendous fun! Bryn Terfel's performance in 'Belshazzar's
Feast' is still the best I know in this work and I was on
the edge of my seat when listening, as I was in the Hall.

Evelyn Glennie and Michael Davies shone in their respective
pieces by Miki and Massenet and then it was time for that
traditional finale! One run-through of the Elgar is
perhaps enough (we had no less than three in the RAH) and
during the Sea Songs you can hear yours truly giving a
stentorian bravo after the Hornpipe - that's just before I
dissolved into tears during 'Farewell, Ye Spanish Ladies',
a number which I particularly love.

No National Anthem? A mistake, I feel; it was certainly done
on the evening.......... and one small gripe - at a running
time of 79.29 I know something has to give, but couldn't Sir
Andrew's speech have been included? He's such a brilliant
communicator as well as being a superb musician and if 'Rule,
Britannia' had had to be sacrificed I don't think I'd have
been unduly worried!

Someone shoot that idiot with the popgun 7 Jun 2002
By Doug Urquhart - Published on Amazon.com
It isn't easy to record the Last Night of the Proms.

An essential part of the experience is the audience participation - clapping in time to the Sailor's Hornpipe, bellowing out the chorus of Rule Britannia, the amazing sound of 7,000 people singing Parry's Jerusalem, even the occasional hoots, bangs and other interruptions (as long as they're occasional). It's important to capture this, otherwise all you get is a concert.

Unfortunately this recording seems biased towards the audience. The orchestral sound was muddy, but every pop, squeak, hoot from the audience was crystal clear. Towards the end I was hoping that someone would strangle the idiot with the popgun who was sitting to the right of the auditorium, and interrupting all the quieter passages.

Oh well - put it down to the acoustics of the Albert hall.

I still enjoyed the recording.

A Powerful Performance of Belshazzar's Feast 1 Jun 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
The performance made of Belshazzar's Feast at this Prom concert is the best I have heard. Having played in a performance of this work, I can attest to its difficulty, yet the BBC Symphony, Singers, Chorus, Bryn Terfel, and Andrew Davis make it sound effortless. The final moments of the work, as the chorus sings of the Israelites jubilation at the fall of Babylon, are some of the most astounding I've heard on a recording.

POMP & CIRCUMSTANCE - RULE BRITANNIA 7 July 2000
By WILLIAM D HUFF - Published on Amazon.com
WITHOUT A DOUBT THE MOST ROUSING CHORAL VERSION OF THESE TWO WORKS EVER RECORDED. BRYN TERFEL'S RENDITION OF RULE BRITANNIA LITERALLY BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE WHILE THE ELGAR WILL BRING TEARS TO YOUR EYES.
