The werewolf organization was the last ditch at revenge by the fanatical nazi party. Members were to go underground and carry on the fight after the fall of nazi Germany and the country under enemy occupation. All the nazi party movements set up their own werewolf groups from Hitler youth to the SS and Gestapo with widely varying degrees of success. Schools were set up to teach the groups in the art of sabotage and assassination with various skills taught from bridge demolition to laying anti-personnel mines or even the best place to cut phone lines. Leaflets were printed encouraging the general population to commit acts of sabotage with hint and tips of what to do, these had some success but mostly people were concerned with finding food to participate. The trained fanatical groups had some success but the allies some cleaned up any resistance, they didn't only attack the allies but also terrorized the local population who they thought were collaborating. This publication has the information and detail of an academic research but without being boring or dry to read. A riveting read on this little known part of the secret war.

The Nazi 'Werewolf' guerrilla movement is rarely covered by historians of the WW2 era, and when it is, tends to be briefly dismissed as insignificant and having made no real impact. But this book is diligently researched and well written, and brings to light the activities and influence of 'The death scream of the Nazi regime'.
The author covers various aspects of the Werewolf resistance movement, including training and organisation (or lack of it), various operations carried out during wartime and after hostilities had officially finished, and the attitudes and motivations of various parties involved.
Some of the descriptions of the actions carried out are really involving and it has to be said exciting, although at points I got a bit bored of a writing style that sometimes just seems to list numerous stories very similar in nature, one after the other...eg. 'yet another Werewolf group operating at this time...' . But this is a minor gripe about a book that that generally does a lot to bring to light an often unexplored period of history. Recommended.

Great story, oddly structured... 9 May 2010
By C. Reach - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Here's the thing.. I enjoy hard historical military literature. I enjoy picking the brains of great generals and statesmen, etc. But this book drags on at first. I think it is the structure of the book. The author is very capable of telling a great story and the material is well researched and interesting. The problem lies in the fact that the first section of the book goes into great detail involving the hierarchy of the Werwolf movement which, even by nazi standards, was a jumbled bureaucratic mess.

Solution? Easy. Jump around. Read about the Werwolf exploits, then their mottled command structure.

Final word is, if you are interested in or ever wanted to discover more about the Nazi guerilla movement I highly recommend this book. There are plenty of great, well documented stories of the insurgents and their methods. They just surface a bit later in the book.

Good read. 22 Dec 2011

Lots of info on ways the Werewolves harassed the axis power. To compare the Werewolves to Muslim Insurgents is hogwash. These are the real deal. The Muslims should be considered blessed that the Americans don't treat them the way they treated the Germans. (i.e. whole villages leveled for 1 sniper, all women in 1 village being raped)

Not trying hard enough 20 Jan 2001
By Gestur Páll Reynisson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This historical reasearch is in my accounts, just short of a good book. Even though the author spends a good amount of time explaining the origins and training of these bandits of a lost cause, I find in too many places, especially in 4th and 5th chapter, unfinished research of the fate of many of the Werewolf leaders and other mebers, it is surprising too me, for example, that Dr. Perry had not been able to find out if one the arrested Germans had been executed or not. In my view it a matter of digging deep enough in Allied archives, too bring the answer. That's called research. The good aspect of this book is that it gives a reasonable insight into this interesting period of the Nazi era. The author had a good and a fascanating subject in his hands but fails too complete the research on the matter.
