REVIEW
"Kelvin Hughes' THE LAST LORRY is a captivating read which takes place during the final hours of the Spanish Republic." (Essential Magazine)

Madrid. March 1939.

The final hours of the Spanish Republic.

As the doomed Spanish capital prepares to surrender after two years of stubborn resistance, one final mission remains. A lorry, disguised as an ambulance, must leave the city and head south to the port of Alicante, where a ship is waiting to take its valuable secret cargo to South America. The lorry’s cargo is so important that the victorious rebels will stop at nothing to capture it.

The person given this unenviable task is a young Captain, Daniel Miller Gonzalez, a man who has proved his loyalty to the legitimate Government of Spain on battlefields across the Iberian Peninsula. Together with his lifelong friend Fernando, an English nurse, and the driver of the lorry, Dani tries to outwit the advancing forces of General Franco in a dangerous game of cat and mouse along the last remaining route south out of Madrid. He knows that this final corridor of escape is closing in on him and that every moment is vital, but they can only travel along the back roads and at night as Rebel aircraft are out hunting for them during the daytime.

The man entrusted with the task of hunting down the last lorry is the ruthless Captain Roberto Ruiz Roman, a brutal and sadistic expert in extracting information and sniffing out ‘Reds.’ And, as General Franco himself has said “better Dead than Red.” Captain Ruiz has the entire rebel war machine at his disposal for this final wartime mission, and he is not a man accustomed to failure.

This is a story of supreme loyalty, of courage when all hope is lost, and, ultimately, of betrayal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Novel set at the end of the Spanish Civil War 4 Jun. 2014

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is an action packed story about a small band of comrades sent on a deadly mission to deliver a secret cargo in the last few hours of the Spanish Civil War. The journey across Spain unfolds with a series of vivid descriptions not only of the horrors of war but also of the villages and towns that the group escape through. The characterisation is strong throughout the book and you get a genuine sense of the desperate times as the civil war comes to an end. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable read with an original twist at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Plot 25 Aug. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book, it was a good and easy read. Living in Spain and having travelled that route to Madrid I found the description of the places very accurate. It was an exciting read, you don't know if the Republicans will reach Alicante with their precious cargo, whilst being chased by a Captain in Francos army. I also liked the fact that both the Republicans and facists were portrayed equally badly. Neither was shown as the victim or worse than the other. It has a lovely twist at the end. I will look for his other books as this was a thoroughly good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Civil War adventure with a twist 15 Dec. 2014
By Scrubbs
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this as an aficionado of the Spanish Civil War, I'm always on the look out for good fiction for what is a neglected period of history. The Last Lorry captures the period reasonably well, spinning a captivating yarn of Republican servicemen (and woman) trying to stay ahead of advancing Nationalist forces as they carry out a final mission. Some of the "bad guys" are a little stereotypical but all in all not insufferable. As I approached the middle of the book I became a little alarmed at the story seemed to have reached it's climax (and the author seemed to be running out of steam). This is where a complete twist happened as the story is propelled into a present day narrative. As disappointed as I was initially with the move away from the last days of Republican Spain as the theme I soon warmed to the much improved literary style, a place where the author seemed much more comfortable and expressive as well as the intriguing conclusion to the mysteries of the first part of the book. The second part is emotive and heart warming. It feels like two stories in one and I was left wishing the author could have written the first part as well as he wrote the second.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last should be first in reading list 13 Mar. 2015
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This was an excellent read. Although a novel it was clearly based on historical accounts of the Spanish Civil War (from the Republican viewpoint) and was quite gripping. The ending was an interesting twist.
