Sci-fi drama starring Zosia Mamet and Olympia Dukakis. When Rhea Carver (Mamet) realises that she is different to the other children at school, she reaches out to her grandmother, Rosmarie (Dukakis). As Rhea's mother (Virginia Madsen) and grandmother tell her the truth about the women of the Carver family being descendents of ancient witches, Rhea fears that life as she knew it will never be the same.

This is a fairly simple story designed to appeal to young teen pagan girls. Rhea (Zosia Mamet) is our teen raised in a pagan family who worship the goddess in all her names. She is starting to develop special powers according to an ancient prophecy... and discover boys.

Zosia Mamet is made to look plain looking to appeal to ugly duckling teen girls. She is about as "homely" as Hollywood would dare to go. She goes from being a picked on kid, to one that might save the world, but would really rather go to art school. Her boyfriend Oliver (Sam Underwood) is good looking, understanding, opens up to her, writes poetry about her, and supports her. He is clearly out of her league, but in these pop teen fantasies, life is a romance novel.

In the film there is a celebration area of concentric circles. Concentric circles, circles, mazes, and even string is all part of womb imagery of the goddess with the inner lines representing the umbilical cord. This is true with ancient stories and myths.

The film incorporates big name stars who toil with the pretentious script. The movie struggles to achieve a decent climax. The special effects were minor as one might be able to deduce by looking at the film outtakes on the reverse of the DVD cover.

Not for old guys like me or people who might have a hissy fit about a film showing magic and witchcraft in a good light.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex, or nudity.

I love this movie. It is not your typical mainstream big movie, it is a simple movie that has been missed. I only discovered it by accident through a friend. If your on a spiritual pathway this gives better insights and I find you learn something new each time you watch it.
There is a story line for another one but I don't think this will be made but I am secretly keeping my fingers crossed they do.
If you like Practical Magic with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman you will like this.

I too thought the cover misleading, and clearly I should have read the other reviews before purchase, but it has Aiden Quinn and Olympia Dukakis in it right? Well neither of those great Actors gets a chance to show their skills by a poorly written film. It's pretty, the lead girl is good, but it didn't really DO anything, and I felt quite cheated at having sat through it and wasted my time. Could have been so much better.

A girl finds enjoys being different. Then she finds out she is different. She does not want to be different. She learns that different is a positive thing. We leave her contemplating her options at being different.

The movie is cute at best. We have a lot of talented contemporary actors such as Olympia Dukakis and Aidan Quinn. There is a plethora of contemporary songs. Lots of nice pictures of the woods. We see some blood and guts but nothing gratuitous.

The program hits us over the head with messages such as tolerating the differences in people and their ways, don't drink and drive, there's time enough for love, be happy with who you are, and be happy in your work.

If you have the opportunity to see it for free it is worth the time spent.

A really sweet story set in a nice simple way. Great cast and strong performances from some big names actually. Good family film in a good tradition of magic and fantasy. Bit of an abrupt end though I thought (no spoilers).

Teen love drama about a young woman coming of age into her powers. I gave it a chance as I like fantasy and some of the actors that are in the film, but it is not a film that most adults will find satisfying.

Starts off interestingly. Ends with a whimper. Ms. Mamet is the only redeeming feature. She does well with the awful material she's dealt. The other actors fare less well on this score.

Not much of a storyline. Possibly may appeal to your teenagers for the love story component. However, the acting was terrible, apart from Aiden Quinn. Not worth watching. Sorry
