I saw this book in the local Oxfam, on the same shelf that I picked up Muriel Gray's 'The First Fifty' some months earlier. The title and style of the book caught my interest as did the author name. I picked it up, keen to get my teeth into more outdoor tales but it surpassed expectations.
This book tells many a tale from Hamish Brown's life, such as the Braehead High School excursions, Brown's dogs Kitchy and Storm, cross-country walks, stories from many corners of Scotland and has thrown in the occasional political issue too - stalking, land management and ownership, etc.
Although similar in title and layout than the laugh-out-loud First Fifty, it's a different book and simply superb. I read it cover to cover one afternoon and have since then flicked back through the many stories, often enjoying the camaraderie and adventure. But I was also deeply moved, most particularly in the stories about Braehead and Storm.
I was surprised the Amazon page hasn't seen more activity for it is one of the few books I feel especially worth a review.
