Product Description

Product Description

Based on extensive research, a fictionalised account of the first days of the Holocaust, and the true story of how one teenage boy managed to escape the horrors of the death camps.

In January 1942, a group of young Jews are rounded up in a small town in Poland and taken to an experimental site near Chelmno. At first, they have no idea why the Nazis have picked them out for special treatment, or why they've been imprisoned rather than killed. Over the following few days, they gradually piece together the terrible truth of what they are witnessing. One of their number, a boy called Jakob Preiss, struggles to overcome his fears and find a way home.

This is quite a short book, but it packs an enormous punch. The story is told in a straightforward style which makes the scenes of sudden violence and the slow sense of mounting horror all the more effective. I think it would ideal for students who are studying the Holocaust, as well as for those who are interested in the subject, because it's hero is a teenager and a character it's easy to sympathise with. It also throws light on an aspect of the period I'd never really heard about before, namely the time just before places like Belsen and Auschwitz were set up. Having said that, it does contain a few swear words, and some of it is truly gruesome. This story really haunted me after I'd read it, and I always think that's a sign of good writing.

Very powerful 31 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a really powerful story. It's about a teenage boy who is one of a number of people rounded up in a small Polish town and taken to Chelmno, the site of the first of the death camps. What makes it really chilling is that the characters have no idea what's going on at first, because the whole Final Solution hasn't started yet, so the reader discovers the truth at the same time as the characters. This gives you a very unsettling feeling of what it must have been like to witness these events.

I thought this was brilliantly written because it made me cry and that's not something that happens often with a book. My only reservation about this story is that I wanted it to go on longer. But it has certainly made me look again at this part of history and it vividly brings home the horror of it all.
