Australia released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), French ( Subtitles ), Spanish ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Behind the scenes, Cast/Crew Interview(s), Interactive Menu, Remastered, Scene Access, Special Edition, SYNOPSIS: Sprawling Mario Puzo novel about an Italian family of gangsters draws the inevitable comparison to 'The Godfather', but does find its own direction. Headed by Don Domenico Clericuzio (Aiello), the family executes a rival gang on the night of the Don's daughter's wedding, including her new husband, the son of his rival. Unfortunately the daughter (Alley) gets pregnant and the repercussions of the night drift into the future. Spanning 1964-1985, the film jumps forward with the growing up of the grandson (Cochrane) who has grown ruthless and scheming. A co-rival in the family is a nephew (Gedrick) who has been raise to take his father's (Mantegna) place in the family as a hitman and has established his place by assassinating a man who killed a Senator's daughter. However, he is proven to not be ruthless enough and moves into the family's casino business in Vegas. When the nephew falls in love with a beautiful actress (Hannah), everything is set in place for the grandson to set up a coupe to take over the family.

Great 11 April 2005
By A Customer
Format:DVD
I read the book and thought it was brilliantly written, one gripe was that the Don was like a poet constantly coming up with sayings. Apart from that the book had everything. I was a bit worried about watching this but i can safely say that the film has done the book justice.

I need to write seperatley about the acting in the film as it was magnificent particulary Joe Mantega and Jason Gedrick, both playing lead roles very well. Don Clericuzio played by Danny Aiello whose performance although very good, i felt someone else could have played the part better. His daughter Rosemary is played by two people one at a young age and one when she goes crazy. When she goes crazy shes played by Kirstie Alley from look whos talking. Theres a good supporting staff too but the characters in the movie business are played by people who overact way too much, like the director of the film in the film. I honestly thought that was a joke. People have commented on Daryl Hannah and her performance but i thought it was average and at times cringe worthy, also she is not the divine beauty that was mentioned in the book. The brother giorgio silvio and vinnie are played well but apart from Giorgio are under used characters in the movie, apart from the war they hardly do much else. Dante was played well also, but in the movie some of his more evil acts are missing.

The story is about one war and how it carries through generations to two cousins cross and dante. One evil and one good, the good of course wins. I know they are part of the mafia but cross seems like a good guy!

If youve read the book you will love this film and i give it a 5 star, if you havent read the book you will find its 262 minutes run time a little too long but i gurantee it is worth the watch and it would get 4 stars.

The Last Don - Excellent 17 April 2010
By Morgan

You must watch this one first then get The Last Don II. This is the best of mini series making and I recommend you to watch it - its well worth the money and the time to watch it.

Many thanks for me being able to watch this over again - the story line is brilliant and its so good my daughter loved it too.

Hence why I bought them for her - and Im borrowing them when shes watched them. We both love Jason Gedrick and you just want to run off with him.

Power, lust, love and revenge and murder all the makings for a good mini series.

Watch it you wont be disappointed.

The Last Don 20 Sep 2010
By Kel
Format:DVD
I first watched this drama on ITV a few years back and when I found out I could have it on DVD I couldn't wait to get it. I did enjoying watching this again but its funny that a few years later you can have a different opinion on how good a movie or tv drama is.
Overall I am glad I could see it again but the chances of me watching it again and again might be slim :)
