Biography

Self-taught on guitar and violin, he is a lifelong autodidact - and his independent streak shines through in his composition and studio work. Always direct and unafraid to speak his mind, his song writing has been praised for its surgical clarity. His work is typified by his trust in the space music can create and a gift for lyrical understatement. He cites his major influence as "Anon".

Product Description

CD Description

"The new CD by Chris Wood (THE LARK DESCENDING) seems to us to be one of the best out of the English folk scene in living memory. There has been much animated discussion on our message board about his recent live appearance on Late Junction playing tracks from it. I think its appeal goes way beyond people who think they like English folk, even to those who think they don't - especially because some of the modern songs on it are awe inspiring. The album's going to be a milestone up there with the likes of 'Penguin Eggs' and 'A Handful Of Earth' and so good it's absolutely guaranteed to not win a Folk Award. Sensational!" - Ian Anderson (fROOTS) Tracks: Hard / Albion / Bleary Winter / Lord Bateman / One In A Million / Our Captain Calls / John Barleycorn / Walk This World.

Beautiful music 25 July 2005
Format:Audio CD
I'm not a folk fan. I've discovered certain folk artists lately, after an aversion that was mainly a result of prejudice. Once you get into it, it's a compelling emotional, and sometimes haunting, musical landscape. For instance, a song on this album - 'One in a million' - made me cry. It was a moving story, conveyed in a beautiful song. The traditional songs on this album are also powerfully sung and played. I didn't feel the opening track was as strong as the rest of the album, but over all I recommend it highly!

I am not always a huge fan of folk, but I had the good fortune to sing with this great singer and writer once which opened me up to the style much more. Personally I love the contryside and walking in it, and this album just seems to capture the feeling of the British landscape and the communities within it. Whether you are more of a town person or a country person, I almost guarantee this will have significance for you... especially with time and patience. Possibly the most memorable and moving album I have ever heard.

By Victor HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
It is really great to see that in this day and age dominated by plastic pop that records like this can get made. The disc is packed full of seemingly simple folk tunes, with a prominent vocal, guitar and sparse string backing. As others have said, it Chris Wood makes it all seem so easy, the sign of a real craftsman. It is a subtle piece, at first it doesn't seem much, but then you start to listen closely to the lyrics, and notice the complexity of the music and soon you are sucked into Wood's world and before you know it the record has ended all too soon.

Wood writes and sings with great charm. His is a storytelling style, and conjures up some delightful imagery in the mind. The style is laid back and easy going, at times mournful and at times thankful. While I love the flashier music of, say, Spiers and Boden or Seth Lakeman I find that this delightful slow burner is one that I turn to more often. Five stars.
