It is really great to see that in this day and age dominated by plastic pop that records like this can get made. The disc is packed full of seemingly simple folk tunes, with a prominent vocal, guitar and sparse string backing. As others have said, it Chris Wood makes it all seem so easy, the sign of a real craftsman. It is a subtle piece, at first it doesn't seem much, but then you start to listen closely to the lyrics, and notice the complexity of the music and soon you are sucked into Wood's world and before you know it the record has ended all too soon.
Wood writes and sings with great charm. His is a storytelling style, and conjures up some delightful imagery in the mind. The style is laid back and easy going, at times mournful and at times thankful. While I love the flashier music of, say, Spiers and Boden or Seth Lakeman I find that this delightful slow burner is one that I turn to more often. Five stars.
