Format: Paperback
This is an early review, I've read through several dozen pages.

Half of the book is text explanation of the issues of laptop ownership and operation, cautions on working with laptops, etc. I think the first 40 pages should be read by anyone thinking of purchasing a laptop. It gives a good grounding on features, how they differ from desktop computers in design, access to internals, upgrade options, etc. This is followed by repair decision flowcharts that are compact and focused. It is always good to have an efficient decision tree. Each chart then includes descriptions of chart components on pages that follow, a great idea.

By the way, the author self-publishes at Foner Books and the support web site there is a great adjunct to the book. For example, the text in the book mentions about using a multimeter to test output on an AC adapter. It cautions that you should get the laptop manufacturer's repair (not user) manual as models vary greatly. The caution is repeated on the web site (he has an overall video intro that helps) but the site has photos of the task using a particular laptop model to give a general idea.

The book is thin and can easily fit in a gear bag, if needed. All in all, this is well-recommended.

Morris Rosenthal has done an excellent job of capturing the logical complexity of troubleshooting laptops into flowcharts. The book is at the intermediate level, stretching the beginner and providing useful prompts for professional troubleshooters who can't always obtain quick recall of all the logical connections between symptoms, especially at the end of a long day. The whole point of a flowchart is to aid rapid and accurate inference and the flowcharts achieve that well.

It is a big task to take on a book like this and the quality of the book is a testament to the author's years of acquiring knowledge and practical skills. I wonder if the book might be even more useful if there were two versions of it, one aimed at the novice or amateur without the time and inclination to dig deep into the subject, and the other aimed at the professional troubleshooter and referencing more of the diagnostic tools and methods used at that level. Nevertheless, the explanatory textual notes that accompany the flowcharts enable the author to speak to a wide audience. I recommend the book, it's money well invested.
