A rare classic 10 Jun 2008
Format:Hardcover
At times this book has been not at all easy to get hold of but it's well worth the effort. Written for school students, it explores a range of mathematical topics to stimulate their interest. The text is exceptionally clearly written and the illustrations, while only in two colours, are good even by modern standards.

I've often hoped that it might be reprinted in a paperback version - alas the publishers have not yet obliged.

This book is timeless, dealing as it does with the fundamentals of mathematics, and in a way which is accessible to almost anyone. If you need a painless introduction to the field of mathematics, then get hold of a copy of this masterpiece by Frank Land. You won't be disappointed. He has a gift for making an abstruse and often incomprehensible subject not just interesting but compelling. The book is shot through with examples, even extending to an equation written in Egyptian hieroglyphics!

The mathematical level is probably somewhere in the CGSE region, but concentrates on the fundamental ideas underlying much of the subject. There are chapters on units, simple and compound, on time, on logs, pianos and spirals, on geometry and shapes, on algebra, and even on things such as the Fibonacci series and the Golden Section. With over 250 pages in large format (18.5 x 25 cm) paperback (but strongly bound) it is quite a long book, and not cheap. But having read it as a teenager (er, 40+ years ago) it certainly fired my interest and should do the same for any serious-minded youngster who really wants to know what maths is all about. I don't think one could do better, even now.

This book was a great dissapointment to me. It acheived good reviews frrom amongst others Marcus Du Sautoy who claimed it had a great influence on his attraction to mathematics. I found the book confusing. It jumped from being over simplistic to over complex; introducing formulae from nowhere, which were never explained. It is also extremely dated dwelling largely on imperial standards and measurements. It also dwells on historical units which may be interesting but of little value today. Reflecting the pre 1960 era, it would now be classed as overtly racist and this perhaps explains why it is now out of print. I doubt if any publisher would re print it unedited. The market price for this book is extortionate and reflects nothing more than it's scarcity value. I would think the utility value of the book is minimal. I cannot recemmend it.
