4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not for the novice! 22 July 2007
Format:Paperback
There is no doubt about it this is an excellent book for anyone with an interest and acquired knowledge of the blues, however, I would not recommend it for anyone who has no prior knowledge on the subject because this book would be hard work. For those who have just taken an interest and would like to learn more I would suggest reading Nigel Williamson's 'Rough Guide To The Blues' or Bill Wyman's 'Blues Odyssey' before attempting to read this book. Having said that for those already knowledgeable this book provides an excellent insight into the early development of the blues and the quest of Alan Lomax. It is also a good eye opener to the depth of early racial prejudice in the deep south.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book but not a light read 21 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
half way through the book and it is fascinating. quite a bit of religious stuff early on which i skipped cos i don't believe in fairy tales. now getting to the music. enjoyed the stuff explaining the background to the segregation going on and how it affected the black people in the delta.
the music is the real reason i bought the book and now i'm getting into that part of the book. well worth getting and a bargain as it used to be very expensive for an old copy when it was hard to get in the UK. thank you amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're happy and you know it... 8 Mar 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
...clap your hands and stamp your feet - the history of the blues by an American who appreciated his heritage at a time he could do something about capturing it for future generations. Wanted it for ages, hard to find good HB copies - finally got an ex-library copy from another site. Brilliant read!

A successful Christmas present, arriving on time.in good condition. He has always had a passion for the blues since he was a teenager so gave him the background to them.
