Sinikka Langeland is a 50-something Norwegian singer & Kantele player. A Kantele is a zither-like plucked string instrument & it is used to great effect on this album.
Although Sinikka has had a long & distinguished career, it is only her move to ECM Records in recent years that has brought her to my attention.
She writes all her own music but on this album sets her music to poems written by Edith Sodergran & Olav H Hauge.
Her voice is very evocative of harsh Scandinavian environments (& reminded me somewhat of Agnes Buen Garnas on "Rosenfole" with Jan Garbarek). The music speaks of human endeavour, belonging and passion and the musicianship is excellent - aside from Langeland, there is Arve Henriksen on trumpet, Trygve Seim on saxophones, the impeccable Anders Jormin on double bass & the previously unknown (to me) Markku Ounaskari on drums.
All song selections are excellent, probably none moreso than the opening title track.
Highly recommended, particularly next to a warm fire on a harsh winter's night, hot cocoa or glass of red in hand.
