5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent portrayal of medieval life 25 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed Elizabeth Ashworth's portrayal of the early lives of Mabel and William against the background of life in late 13th and early 14th century England. This background came across with wonderful authenticity without being 'overdone' (as I have sometimes seen in other medieval novels). It introduced us to the sights, sounds, smells, ambience and customs of the times, while at the same time giving the delightful story of how Mabel and William met, fell in love and married. After this 'taster', I look forward to reading more about Mabel and William in 'An Honourable Estate'.
Definitely a 'must read' for anyone who enjoys English medieval history, and also a great introduction for anyone who has no prior knowledge of this period. As a medieval historian by profession, I give this book my highest recommendation.

This is an interesting short read for anyone who wants to know more about life in a medieval manor house. Details of everyday life and customs of the time are well observed.
