4.0 out of 5 stars An exciting late Victorian romance 24 Jan 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
"The Lady And The Lion" is a work of a talented writer and archaelogist. The story is set in Victorian Egypt and London.
Charlotte Fairchild is a young widow and a passionate archaelogist. After the tragic death of her archaelogist husband, she returns to England full of guilt and decides to leave Egyptology and all her dreams behind. She lives a dry and eventless life at her strange family's house in London. The only thing that reminds her of Egypt is her desert cat Nefer.
Dylan Pierce is a Welsh adventurer who met Charlotte in Egypt and who is an archaelogist himself. He has a reputation as a tomb thief and libertine who is capable of everything for money.
Charlotte and Dylan meet in London three years after their first encounter in the Egyptian desert. Dylan is a famous Egyptologist and the appointed director of the forthcoming Egyptian exhibition of the Colville Collection. Charlotte has a very bad opinion about Dylan and she doesn't want to have anything with him. Dylan is attracted to her and tries to change her mind.
They are forced to spend much time together because of the circumstances and they get closer to their real personalities.
This story is a fast-paced adventure spiced up with some mystery bringing to life the exciting profession of Egyptologists, their life and fights in the late Victorian society and interesting talks about Egypt's rich past. I loved the romance too.
Ms Kirk describes her characters as everyday living individuals with all their faults, passions and mistakes. The secondary characters are interesting and supporting and they all contribute to the success of this book.
THE LADY AND THE LION is a very entertaining historical romance satisfying both the fans of historical romance and Egyptology too. I have enjoyed Ms Kirk's work very much and I hope she will delight her fans by writing more books with similar settings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Victorian romance 7 April 2001
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In 1895, Egyptologist Charlotte Fairchild wanted the love of her spouse Ian and for the pair to continue the work of her deceased renowned father in the Valley of Amun. However, Ian thought differently and plans to "sell" the dig and return to England. A drunk Charlotte persuades Dylan "Lion" Pierce, known for looting sites, to not buy the excavation from her husband. However, an angry Ian enters a tomb without his "good luck" wife and dies when a cave-in occurs.

Two years later in England, Dylan gives a posthumous award to Sir Reginald, Charlotte's father. He meets Charlotte for the first time since she convinced him not to loot her father's site. He hires her to help him with an exhibition he is forming and soon they begin to fall in love as she realizes the lure of the looting lion is that of love.

THE LADY AND THE LION is an exciting late Victorian romance starring two independent and powerful individuals and Ancient Egypt. The story line is fast-paced as the audience obtains a taste of late nineteenth century Egyptology fever that grips much of Western Europe. Fans of the sub-genre will marvel at Cynthia Kirk's strong debut tale that never stops entertaining the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Debut Novel 20 April 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The lush cover on this book caught my eye, with a golden pyramid behind the dashing hero and a woman with 'hair like silver moonlight.' What a treasure of a novel this turned out to be, full of spirited adventure and surprises a la 'The Mummy' blended with intrigue a la 'Indiana Jones.' A well-crafted gem on the romance shelf!
