I came across the Paul Sussman books less than a year ago. My favourite genre is the mystery of some lost artefact that when found will change the world. Novel idea it is not, many have written on this theme, but I get drawn into, However, Sussman's books do not follow this theme, but do have some historical facts that he weaves his yarn around. Most of the books I read have approximately 500 pages (paper backs), so when I read a review on his first book (you know the usual thing - people who read this have also read this and this) I thought I would have a go. His books much longer, 750 ish. Initially Yusef Khalifa is the main character in the first 2 books, with Arieh Ben-Roi coming along in the third book. Have to say, the way Paul Sussman writes about the character of each, their background, their warts, you can really relate to these characters. I tend to agree with some of the reviewees here that perhaps this book is the best of the four. Maybe because I was familiar with the characters perhaps, but he weaves his plot and sub-plots in masterful fashion. It surely is a great loss to the readers out there, the unofficial writers guild and have course his wife that we will not be able to see a furtherance in the careers of the characters (I know). So anyone who reads this, please give all his books a read, I promise you, you will fully enjoy.
