5.0 out of 5 stars Officially fun for all ages! 7 Oct 2009
I've grown to believe I was loner when it came to the fascination with Lego, yet many individuals I've met over the years gradually begin to admit it. What was always missing though was a comprehensive guide, or indeed detailed catalogue of all the Themes that have existed, and the sets within them. Even as I was building my sets in the early 90's as a child, I knew their was a wealth of history before all the sets I owned.

So once again, Waterstones came to rescue as I saw this book on one of my time-killing visits, taking me completely by surprise. Just as an early eye-opener, it appears this book is available both on its own (as it appears on this Amazon product page) and as part of a set with another book called 'Standing Small', a catalogue of all the mini-figures in Legos history. I was fortunate enough to lay my hands on this box-set, and so while I talk 'The Lego Book' first, bare in mind 'Standing Small' is not part of this product page.

As you flick through this book, you'll end up talking to yourself, saying "Oh.. I always wanted that one!" and most of the other comments you'd make in a toy shop. This is the great thing about the book - it's not a progressive narrative, as although theirs an introduction by the author, aside the from the small pieces of text explaining particular themes, this should be treated as a graphical book and not a textual analysis. So, if you like big colourful pictures like me, you're bound to be entertained!

What becomes apparent when viewing the transitions of bricks and themes is that the 1990's was surely a peak for companies imagination and creativity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be... 9 Dec 2011
By MrsGatz
So, after reading the many positive reviews for this book and the young ages mentioned I thought this was going to be perfect for my 4 yr old nephew who loves lego. I had read the reviews for the Lego Ideas book and decided that this book seemed to be better suited. Alas, it has just arrived and although it is every bit as impressive as the other reviewers have said; it looks good, and I am sure it is interesting to the Lego fan, it is not what I thought it was going to be. Somehow I got the impression this would show ideas of the many models / structures you can make from random bits of lego. It does not! It shows more of a history of Lego and pictures of the different kits- past and present. So this review is for anyone else who is considering this book as an inspiration for what to do with your lego pieces. This is not the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars legotastic! 21 Mar 2011
I bought this for me (yup, 30 year old lego fan!). I was immedietly impressed by the presentation of the book set. You get "The Lego Book" and "Standing Small", which are both hardback books presented in a good quality cardboard slip. Both books are fabulous, showing detailed images of lego. Although these books are brilliant and do contain lots of interesting facts about lego, it's just a shame there aren't more models represented. However, on the whole, these books really are superb. My 2 children aged 10 & 12 years(who are also lego fans) love these books as much as I do. The presentation and content of this book set would make it an ideal gift for a lego enthusiast of just about any age.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book. 28 Nov 2010
My 7 year old son loves lego and I bought him this book as a gift which he adores; it's a big, chunky book and is full of lovely pictures which he spends hours going through. It's well written in a detail but child friendly way and is genuinely interesting for him and me as well! If you've got kids who like lego, I'd strongly recommend this as a brilliant gift idea.
