I downloaded this for my nephew to read, and he couldn't put it down. I then read it myself, and really enjoyed it. A great mystery story. I really liked the secret agent character, and the way his investigation of the mystery intertwined with the childrens' own detective work was well plotted. The interaction between the children and him also provided some of the book's funny moments. A really original and fun read.

tongue-in-cheek humor 6 Feb 2012

For any books shown as recommended for children of specific age groups, I read carefully since it was a part of my profession as a librarian. Although this is shown as being for middle school aged children, I would bump it to young adult status and older, despite the pre-teen ages of the two child protagonists. First published in London, and set in London and a fake European principality, there are some words and spellings that are probably not familiar to American children (one example: kerb for curb). Some of the vocabulary is for older readers, as is some of the mention of alcohol comsumption, some anatomical references, and a few scenes that some might view as sketchy with overtones of cross-dressing in the context of spy disguises. Frankly, older middle schoolers would probably love it, but parents should always be aware of what children are reading. Children hear so much at school that it is hard to say what they know. Kids generally love most of the things in this book: kid spies, computers and technology, vampires, werewolves, secret service/spy intrigue and spy techniques and kits, and improbable, hilarious escapes from the bad guys. Adults will see a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor and puns, along with Inspector Clouseau(Pink Panther)and Maxwell Smart(Get Smart) slap-stick, bumbling action. It is a fun read.
