Product Description

Product Description

Best-selling author Robin McGibbon was welcomed into the inner sanctum of the Kray twins. For more than ten years, he saw Britain's most notorious killers at close quarters - Reggie in top-security prisons, his bisexual brother, Ron, in Broadmoor's hospital for the criminally insane. As a well-connected, valued friend, who had ghost-written older brother Charlie's autobiography, McGibbon spoke to the twins on visits, on the phone, and corresponded regularly by post. He became such a trusted confidant, he advised on media and personal matters, negotiated TV rights to Ronnie's funeral, and his wife was so admired by the Kray family she was asked to speak on Reggie's behalf in church. Drawing on that first-hand experience, and revealing, for the first time, confidential details of letters to and from the twins, McGibbon describes their contrasting personalities: the infuriating mood swings and egomania of the hyper, more aggressive, Reggie, and the gentle courtesy and generosity of his paranoid-schizophrenic twin, who revealed, in an exclusive interview, the real reason behind one of the Kray's legendary murders - and personal memories he had never shared with anyone but family. McGibbon, a former national newspaper journalist, who ghost-wrote Barbara Windsor's best-selling autobiography, "All of Me", has written a pacy narrative, coloured with a cast of supporting characters - from the Yorkshire Ripper, TV stars and Page Three Girls to gangland hierarchy and convicted criminals the twins befriended in prison. With sensational revelations that should guarantee newspaper serialisation, it is an enthralling and compelling read that describes for the first time the bizarre lives the twins led after an Old Bailey judge jailed them in 1969, saying that society had 'earned a rest' from their activities. It is a genuine 'inside' story of the country's most infamous killers, whose terrifying violence shocked the nation and made them underworld legends.

About the Author

Robin McGibbon, a former national newspaper journalist and publisher, met the Kray twins in 1985, after publishing older brother Charlie's memoirs, Me and My Brothers. He re-wrote it three years later and has since ghost-written five autobiographies, including Barbara Windsor's No.2 bestseller, All of Me, and Escape from the Kray Madness, by Chris Lambrianou. He has also written unauthorised biographies of Mick Hucknall, Paul Gascoigne and Phillip Schofield, and, in 2008, released The Kray Tapes, a boxset of CDs of his exclusive conversations with all three Kray brothers.

Misleading Title 13 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I think this is an attempt to squeeze the last piece of money out of the whole Kray scene saga.I have read a lot of crime books including those written about the Kray,s .The books written about them, their early years and events as they unfolded were interesting and with a story that has a beginning and conclusion.
I think the title of this book tries to give the impression that is about the defending of their reputation and the scenarios of their lives in prison.
It's actually just the author trying to obtain snippets of information of already known events with slight variation wheedled out of them on prison visits
and a bit of small talk from Charlie.

The book I found, seemed to drag on with no real interest.I feel the whole book could have been written on a few pages, instead it has been stretched out into a complete edition.Although to be honest perhaps this review is possibly inaccurate as I stopped reading less than halfway through(something I very rarely do ) as I found it very monotonous.I did try skipping to the last chapter to see if there was any improvement, but unfortunately it appeared no different to the first part of the book.
I have since listened to the tapes and found these a little better, probably because its less effort to listen to than read.
I do not however recommend either.........

Very good book. 18 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
After all the previous Kray books there is perhaps not much more to say but the authors account of his personal / business dealings with the three Kray brothers is a well written informative read. It does not paint a nice picture of Reg but backs up his views with copies of his and Reg's letters. At one point Charlie agreed to tell him 'the truth' and the book would be printed after all the Krays were dead but sadly this never took place. A great read!
