This is an excellent book that introduces Knowledge Management (KM) and then discusses in specific detail how KM can be implemented in different organisations.

The three introductive chapters form a good survey, pulling in key KM concepts such as:

· different types of knowledge that reside in organisations · use of IT in KM · development of a knowledge sharing culture.

Tiwana draws on previous work by well regarded KM exponents such as Davenport, Prusack, Nonaka and Drucker.

The introduction to KM is suitable as a refresher, or for someone new to KM. There is a very good survey of developments over the past few years, drawing on seminal sources and key players in the KM field.

The book then quickly moves onto the more practical aspect of implementing a KM strategy and system. Tiwana states that the book:

seeks to bridge the gap between KM theory and practice. It shows you how you can implement both a KM strategy and a KM system in your company.

Tiwana then goes on to introduce the "Ten Step Road Map" for implementing KM in an organisation. The steps identified in this "Map" are:

1) Analyse the existing infrastructure 2) Align KM and business strategy 3) Design the KM infrastructure 4) Audit existing knowledge assets and systems 5) Design the KM team 6) Create the KM blueprint 7) Develop the KM system 8) Deploy, using the results-driven incremental methodology 9) Manage change, culture and reward structures 10) Evaluate performance, measure ROI and incrementally refine the Knowledge Management System/Strategy

Tiwana then explains each of these steps in detail, positing ways to approach each step. It is made clear that these approaches depend on the type of organisation the KMS is to be designed for.

There is a CD-Rom of forms included with the book. These are useful aids in following the "Ten Steps". For example, there are a series of forms containing suggested questions to pose when analysing the existing infrastructure (step 1).

However, there are some criticisms that can be made of the "Ten Steps". For example when analysing the existing infrastructure - this should involve any knowledge assets and systems that are already in place. However, Tiwana does not address this until step 4 which occurs after selecting the architecture and design for the KMS. Surely all audit processes should be conducted at the initial stages, then re-visited as part of an ongoing evaluative strategy to improve and validate the KM implementation that takes place.

Nevertheless, this is one of the most in-depth and practical books on KM implementation published at present, and is proving a very popular read.

This is a great book if you are looking for a comprehensive and practical guide to knowledge management. It is clearly written and avoids using jargon. The summaries at the end of each chapter are useful because they are to the point. The author also provides lots of useful references to further knowledge management resources.

An Information Technology Centric KM toolkit, not a general KM guide

This book has been a disappointment. I was looking for further authors to compliment postgraduate research within KM. I would not be recommending this book to those wishing to grasp KM and principles of KM, contrary to several current customer views. Please note the book review is spot on and there is no confusion in the Amazon description, the book title and customer reviews seem to credit the book in KM theory, knowledge and principles - there are better books for this purpose.

The book is an IT centric view, roadmap and a subjective review into approach viewpoints process and pitfalls within IT. The focus is system management and implementation of knowledge platforms, here was my disappointment.**

There are more appropriate authors who are better known, academic KM key speakers and published more preferable KM theory and infortmationa pertaining to organisational competence.

Reason for 1 rather than 2 stars is the quality. Shocking! Whilst the cover is presentable and appears a decent book the contents look photocopied, quality is absolutely the worst I have seen or pruchased in years (Second Edition, Purchased Dec 2009, ISBN 978-0-13-009224-3).

> Looking for a good KM book, buy something else.
> Looking for an KM IT knowledge management system, then this may be a book of interest to you.**

** Based on print quality and readabilty I would not recommend.
