5.0 out of 5 stars Tozer challenges us to know the unknowable God! 26 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This book brings the reader to holy ground indeed. To dare to know the all-powerful, all-knowing, infinite, eternal God is beyond human capacity. Yet Tozer, in appropriate awe of God, tells us that our heart can lead us where our intellect cannot. "That God can be known by the soul in tender personal experience while remaining infinitely aloof from the curious eyes of reason constitutes a paradox best described as Darkness to the intellect But sunshine to the heart." says Tozer quoting a Faber poem/saying.
It is easy to say terms like life-changing in our glib spin-oriented world. But the challenge of this book got at me in a way few books (outside the Bible) have. Tozer's statement about the church "Always the most revealing thing about the Church is her idea of God, just as her most significant message is what she says about Him or leaves unsaid, for her silence is often more eloquent than her speech. She can never escape the self-disclosure of her witness concerning God." touched me on a personal level too.
If you get one Christian book this year - make it "Knowledge of the Holy"

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic 30 Mar 2009
A W Tozer was a minister of the Christian and Missionary Alliance who died in 1963. In 1950 he became editor of his denomination's magazine and wrote articles of great spiritual penetration and insight. He wrote two books which have become classics - 'The Pursuit of God' and 'The Knowledge of The Holy' This book will repay slow, careful reading and give forth its fruit over a long period of time. It merits repeated reading. It deals with the attributes of God and will lead the reader into a deeper knowledge of God and a richer worship. Some modern American popular religious writers have drunk deeply at Tozer's well and quote him frequently. Read them, if you will, but much better to read Tozer himself - and repeatedly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for thnking rightly about God. 20 April 1997
By A Customer
A.W. Tozer was known as a man of God, even to those who were not religious. His concern was that the Church was loosing her once "lofty view of God." So he set out to write a book that devotionally considered the attributes of God. That he did, and did it well.
His small but powerful book offers a precise and thoughtful account of who the God of the Bible is, and what he is like. Tozer accuately descrides God without limiting Him to the Human understanding.
Tozer considers every attribute taught in the Bible and lays them out in plain language. The concepts expounded may be above the common man's understanding, but the language that Tozer uses is not. He puts the "cookies on the bottom shelf so the kids can get them."
His thoughts about God helped me tremendously. The language is understandable, the subject is thoroughly covered and the concepts are thought provoking. This is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meet God. 9 Jan 1998
By A Customer
Easily the best (and actually the shortest) of the many books I have read on God's attributes. This book is not concerned with counting God's attributes or merely providing academic information. God is presented in both his transcendent and immanent splendor. We at once kneel in awe and fear and gratefully reach for his hand of friendship.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gold standard on the attributes of God 13 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is sumptuous. A study into the attributes of God, its short chapters do require frequent reading, real concentration and a willingness to be lifted intio a new realm of insight and understanding. This book transcends denomination and culture, here is truth, distilled and delightful. Here are insights to amaze, humble and astonish. Tozer at the end of his life and a man who has left the best to last. Let 'Knowledge of the Holy' become a companion on the dusty road of the Christian life and be thankful that Tozer was able to write such a guide for all who still seek the 'spiritual path less travelled'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential For Understanding Who God Really Is 5 Jun 1998
By A Customer
It is important in this modern age, where more christians are turning away from the God revealed in Scripture, to have a grasp of who God is and what He is like. With our human, limited understanding of spiritual concepts as deep as those covered by Tozer, this book is nonetheless useful in focusing the mind on God Himself. It is a great resource and reference tool for those who wish to enter into a deeper relationship with God.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazed by stlye and truth 2 Jun 1999
By A Customer
to be perfectly fair this is the most well-writen book i have read all year. The attempt by the author to communicate the incommunicable was certainly valiant. and through his efforts we can be spurred on to pursue our own personal experience and knowledge of the great God of the universe.

A. W. Tozer begins the first chapter of his classic work with the statement, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." In his discussion of God's attributes that follows, he shows himself as one who spent his life in pursuit of an intimate knowledge of God as God has revealed Himself to be, not as man would have Him be. In a day in which people are often heard to say, "When I think of God, I think of Him as . . ." and proceed to create a God after their own image, Tozer provides a much needed corrective. The first time I read The Knowledge of the Holy over 30 years ago, I found myself in an increasing awe and worship of the God who is. The experience has been the same each time I have returned to this small volume that serves to open a window to the loftiest of visions.
