Pure white trash 6 Feb 2007
By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Klansman is pure White trash, with only a few hints at the more intriguing picture that Sam Fuller wanted to make before the producers went down the drive-in exploitation route and replaced him with Terence Young. Lee Marvin is reliably solid as the compromising sheriff, David Huddleston is a long way from Santa Claus as the local Grand Exalted Cyclops (and bank manager), but a drunk-as-a-skunk Richard Burton wiyav tha furni-assed Sowthun assent thess sigh-ed ov Cardiff is a sad sight as he shuffles from scene to scene as if barely aware he's in a movie. But then he'd probably have to have been blind drunk to have signed on to this one. Sample dialog: "Ay heyah he don' even hayav a teevee. He mus' be a commoonist!" But then, what else can you expect from a film that has O.J. as an avenging angel and Cameron Mitchell as a corrupt KKK deputy sheriff called (I'm not making this up) Butt Cutt Cates?

Be warned that not only is the quality atrocious on all the current DVD issues of the film, but they're taken from the very heavily cut US TV version (which also cuts several innocuous lines of dialogue as well as the more graphic violence). At present the only uncut version available is Paramounts uncut NTSC video release in the USA.

I bought this movie because the of the Star names appearing in it. I could not believe how awful Richard Burton's senseless pseudo Southern American drawl sounded. I stuck it out for twenty minutes then just gave up on it.

Not one of Burton's best to say the least.

The Klansman 30 Aug 2009
Format:DVD
A very brave and profound film that deals with the issue of racism. An uncomfortable performance by Richard Burton that becomes more feasable and ultimately heroic as the viewer is immersed in the rawness of this production. It's unusual to see such a star studded cast in what appears as such a low budget film. As a simple metaphor for the roles we play, Burton's entangled character is adrift from the boxes society offers us, and although his integrity is respected where it matters, his future appears doomed. Controversial and atmospheric.
