Product Description

Is the kitchen a workspace or a living space? Most people would surely answer that it is both. The average family spends more time in the kitchen than in any other room in the home. Yet in many houses and apartments the kitchen is at best a purely functional area to be clothed in efficient-looking fitted cupboards, units and surface, or cluttered with unattractive tables and stools. In this book, a kitchen architect shows that a kitchen can be efficient and contemporary yet at the same time offer the traditional comforts and style of an elegant living space. It shows 'unfitted' kitchens solutions working in every type of kitchen space - from large and lofty to small and awkward. As well as presenting case studies, it is full of ideas that will interest not only anyone planning a new kitchen but also designers, architects, decorators and craft enthusiasts.

This book inspired me to do the following: * Create varied work heights; * Put the sink on a wall - not under the window - it makes much more sense as a rack above then allows drips into the sink; * Have only shelves above the work surface - no cupbards; * Paint the kitchen blue!

Although the kitchens in the book are upmarket ones you can take the ideas and apply them to standard ranges - especially if you are willing to mix and match.

Its the only kitchen design book I've recommended to my friends since I read lots of them.

Mixed Emotions 17 Mar 2010

As a Kitchen Designer i had heard about Johnny Grey and wanted to learn more about his designs. This book has left me with mixed feelings,it is the literary equivalent of Marmite, either you love it or hate it. Its a must for Johnny Grey fans who want to know more about his unique design philosophy and attitudes toward kitchens. For the rest its just a book where Johnny blows his own trumpet and harps on that his theory of the unfitted kitchen is superior to the regular fitted kitchen. Anyone buying this book and expecting that it may aid them with designing a kitchen they intend to buy from a mainstream manufacturer will be sorely disappointed. Johnny does give hints and tips on how to plan a kitchen, but they are based solely on his own idealolgy and products, and therefore difficult to replicate if your getting your next kitchen from Ikea et al. And lets face it most of us commoners cant afford to spend £70,000+ on a bespoke Johnny Grey kitchen (if you dont believe his kitchens cost that much, check out his website). From an aesthetic point of view it may provide you with inspiration espicially if you intend to hand paint your kitchen, lots of photo's showing good use of colour and pattern. However the design and colour schemes look very dated now, its obvious that these kitchens are circa late 1980's/early 1990's. This becomes more apparent when you look at Johnny's latest works in his other book and on his website.

The Title is misleading....it is just a brochure for Johnnys own work and a tribute to his late aunt Elizabeth David. It is not the definitive guide it makes out to be,just a vainity project that expresses only one persons veiwpoint and ethos. I liked the visual history section, Johnny has done a lot of research into the evolution of kitchens throughout the ages. However he has conviently left out the most important and influential kitchen design of all time: The Frankfurt Kitchen! For those of you who dont know, The Frankfurt kitchen and its designer Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky are responsible for influencing way all modern fitted kitchens are planned. To say Schutte-Lihotzky revolutionised kitchen design is an understatement. Instead Johnny lionizes his aunt as the mother of modern kitchen design (For the record she was just a food critic). I admire innovators and I think Johnny carved a wonderfull niche for himself, and deserves credit for attempting a different approach, but it may not be the approach for most of us.

I can't beleive this book could be describe at "The Bible on kitchen design - it is very focussed on the author's style and taste and ignores other styles including most of what can be achieved in the typical sized kitchen in UK and certainly most people's budget.

The book is somewhat self-indulgent and contains items that probably satisfy the author's ego (i.e. how his aunt Elizabeth David had her kitchen and an academic chapter on the history of the kitchen) if not much else.

The author probably is the "the worlds best kitchen designer" but very much in a much Mayfair / Upper East Side sense. If you are below 50 or have less than 50,000 pounds to spend and looking for ideas, or a sourcebook forget it.
