Book Description

An English Girl in New York

As the snow starts to fall on Manhattan, PA Dory Mackenzie is a long way from home, far from the comforts and cheer of her cozy family Christmases back in Liverpool.

So when her boss Tyler Alexander offers to pay her pricey ticket home for New Year, Dory just can’t say no… even if she has to pretend to be his girlfriend for the holidays!

Tyler may be hiding the real reason he needs a girlfriend-of-convenience but that’s the least of Dory’s worries when she’s up against the disapproval of his high society mother, and the suspicions of his gorgeous older brother Lucas, the black sheep of the family.

There’s no fooling Lucas, and it’s not just the truth he wants to get closer to… So before the bells have even rung out for Christmas day, Dory finds herself caught up in the Alexander family’s dramas – and sharing more than just a few kisses under the mistletoe!

Lose yourself in this gorgeously romantic and heart-warming novella this holiday season.

More About the Author

Sophie Pembroke has been writing romance for years, ever since she stayed up all night reading Mills and Boon novels as part of her English degree at Lancaster University. She loves to set her contemporary romance stories in the places she has lived - from the wilds of the Welsh mountains, to the gentile humour of the English country village, or the heat and tension of a London summer. She also has a tendency to make her characters kiss in castles.

Currently, she makes her home in Hertfordshire, with her husband and daughter. She writes love stories in her little spare room office, while drinking too much tea and eating homemade cakes. Or, when things are looking very bad for her heroes and heroines, white wine and dark chocolate.

Sophie keeps a blog at www.SophiePembroke.com, which should be about romance and writing, but is usually about cake and castles instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars A warm-hearted and witty Winter romance 26 Jan. 2014
By Julie
Format:Kindle Edition
A heart-warming novella packed with warmth, magic and charm, The Kiss Before Christmas is a spellbinding contemporary romance that will tug at your heartstrings and make you laugh out loud from the talented Sophie Pembroke!

When Dory McKenzie left her family and her life in Liverpool behind for New York, she thought that she was going to be living the dream. With a high-powered job, a gorgeous fiance and a lifestyle that would have made Carrie Bradshaw green with envy, Dory thought that life couldn’t possible get any better for her – until she lost everything in one fell swoop. The fabulous job had fallen through, her fiance had broken her heart and she had been reduced to living in a dreary shoe box of a flat and working as a lowly PA for Tyler Alexander, one of the richest and most successful men in New York. As if coping with loneliness and heartbreak wasn’t bad enough, Dory has to cope with the knowledge that she’s about to spend the festive season all by herself, as she doesn’t have the money to make the journey back home to Liverpool to spend Christmas with her family, whom she’s missing like mad. Dory would do absolutely anything to spend Christmas with her nearest and dearest, so when her boss tells her that he’ll give her the money to spend New Year with her family, Dory is elated. However, there’s a catch: Tyler will give her the money, only if she pretends to be his girlfriend for the holidays. Dory accepts, but little does she realise that her life is about to get more complicated than she ever imagined….

Lucas Alexander is dreading Christmas. As the eldest son of the distinguished Alexander family, Lucas had been set to inherit the duties and responsibilities of running the Alexander estate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pass the mistletoe! 28 Dec. 2013
By Airam
Format:Kindle Edition
Loved it!

You can tell the author has studied English Literature as the story is effortlessly written, which in turn makes it a pleasure to read. Also well edited which meant there were no gaps or scene jumps leaving the reader disorientated as to where the scene was taking place or whose POV they were reading.

A story full of secrets, historical relationship dramas, spiced up with sexual tension and yummy kisses. Add a few snotty posh people, who no one really wants to spend Christmas with, as they are obnoxious, insensitive and act as though need a spring of holly removed from their Ice cold hearts!

It was a nice change to see a couple who are in their 30's and not pigeon holed into 18-25 age group like most books these days. It made it far more interesting and believable that the characters had relationships before and now they were 'love shy'.

I enjoyed it, read it cover to cover in 2 hours and look forward to more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely Christmas Read 21 Dec. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed this novella. It was a quick read that moved quickly and at no point did I lose interest. I really enjoyed Dorys character. She's strong and not afraid to speak her mind to her boss Tyler, when needed.
I felt her pain at missing her family in Liverpool as it reminded me of all the years I spent working away from home and dreaming of home cooked dinners by Mammy.
Loved Lucas, he's the perfect hero, strong but with a vulnerability that will tug at your heart strings. I guessed the 'mystery woman' early on, but I think the author knew that would happen.
A lovely read to pass a few hours over Christmas.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Unlikely Romance 27 Nov. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
With her New York dream in tatters Dory faces Christmas alone, enter her boss Tyler who is clearly attracted, not to mention wholly dependent on her. Tyler is a public relations disaster and Dory is the only one who can save him from his mother's wrath. So rather than spending Christmas with her family in England, she finds herself at Tyler's soulless family gathering, where she feels like a specimen under a microscope.
Hardly the stuff of a Christmas romance but against this unlikely setting Dory meets Lucas, Tyler's older, sexier and single brother. There is simmering chemistry between Dory and Lucas but too many secrets threaten their romance. This novella has some key supporting characters, which illustrate the snobbery and prejudice of Tyler's family perfectly. The story has plenty of humour and a lovely romantic ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars it won't be like those rom-coms 31 Dec. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this little novellas the wrong way round, reading the New Years one at Christmas and the Christmas one at New Years, but that's okay! Because they're both equally festive and charming and lovely!

It's the old "fake girlfriend" story, but as MC Dory assures the reader, it won't be like those rom-coms, as she and her boss are 100% not secretly in love. It would have been an easy heist, if it wasn't for his nightmare hoity-toity family and dishy, mysterious brother. Read in one merry sitting, with a smile on my face throughout (except for when I was glaring at my Kindle when Tyler's cow of a mother was denying Dory chocolate cake), this handsome little story (along with its companion The Kiss Before Midnight) can be read year-round.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Christmas read 4 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
All Dory wants is to be home for Christmas but she is stuck in New York alone and away from her loved ones. When her boss offers her a way to get home for New Years she knows she can't say no.

I really liked Dory. She seemed like she had her head screwed on the right way but she was just so desperate to get home.

While Tyler may seem like the bad one for keeping his real girlfriend a secret he has his reasons and I think deep down he just loves his family.

Lucas is hot. Really hot. He's also very inquisitive. He was like a dog with a bone, he knew something was quite right and he wasn't going to rest until he figured it out.

I enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more of Sophie's books in the future.
