Book 1 of The Kinshield Saga

A mysterious stone tablet with five magical gems has sat abandoned in a cave for two hundred years. The kingdom is in ruins, with only warrant knights to keep the peace. But then, the gems in the tablet, one by one, disappear.

Warrant knight Gavin Kinshield is a man of many secrets. He's the one deciphering the runes in the tablet. Unless he can find a suitable replacement, he'll be Thendylath's next king. All he really wants is the letter written by his ancestor Ronor Kinshield, the last man to see King Arek alive... a letter he must earn by tracking down a common thief.

But when Gavin saves a woman's life, what should have been a simple task draws him face-to-face with his nightmarish past... and the truth of King Arek's demise.

The Kinshield Saga consists of
  • The Kinshield Legacy
  • The Wayfarer King
  • Well of the Damned
  • Kinshield's Redemption (August 2013)

Carol Davis Luce, Author of Night Passage

"From the very first page, The Kinshield Legacy grabs you by the throat and propels you into a world of magic, sorcery, jeweled-eyed gargoyles and a sisterhood of female warriors. A world where beyonders savage unsuspecting travelers; where a dark, yet charismatic, wizard covets the king's throne for his own and will let no one get in his way--including the rightful ruler. He who claims the King's Bloodstone shall reign as king. Enter Gavin Kinshield, warrant knight and rune solver, a man haunted by his past, and a hero like no other. A rousing debut from K. C. May, an author worth watching.

Piers Anthony, best-selling author of the Xanth novels
"The Kinshield Legacy is a rousing good fantasy tale, with nice characterization and some ferocious action. These days I read primarily for business rather than pleasure, but I found myself eager to return to this novel."

SFBook Reviews
"The Kinshield Legacy is a beautifully crafted fantasy work that works so well, perfect escapism and highly recommended."

4.0 out of 5 stars ripping yarn 5 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A thoroughly readable book and entertaining, but the only criticism I have is that it follows a formulaic swords 'n sorcery path. This said, buy it if you like good escapist literature. Good prose and writing style and well edited for typos etc so there is nothing to irritate in this area. Also not the obvious 'self published' style that can be found in some fantasy/sf kindle books.

In the last 30 something years I have read close to 8000 SCI-FI and Fantasy books. So I generally approach a new author with some trepidation and little expectation of something new.
In this case there was nothing new, the theme was a tried and tested sword and sorcery tale, hero, wizard etc etc. But the book was one of those that takes all the elements you come to expect and just delivers them in such a way that you are hooked. The characters are well delveloped and, well, interesting.
It is rare to find a book that makes you care about the characters (+ an horse in this case). I found myself really hoping for the wizard to fall flat on his face, with the heroes size 20 boot pushing his face into the mud..A very enjoyable read, thank you to the author for making an old tale new and exciting.
So many authors try to re-invent the wheel with a different spin, not always successfully. It is refreshing to see one take an old formula and deliver it very well indeed. Top marks.
Roll on book 2.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flawed fantasy 1 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I found this book somewhat frustrating, as I felt that it had four star potential. Good ideas and some interesting characters were held back by occasionally below average writing.

The main protagonist, Gavin, is a man in conflict in addition to being a mix of many male characters from recent fantasy books. He is destined to be king, but is trying to avoid said fate. Sadly for him, this is not to be and he soon finds himself rescuing people, getting an enchanted sword and trading barbs with the requisite beautiful but unavailable woman (Daia). I liked the magic elements, the little quips and found Tyr (one of the baddies) very interesting. The ending set the next book up nicely and we have a suitable band of characters to support Gavin on his way to the throne.

The main failings of this book are the first few chapters which I found confusing (could just be me), the black and whiteness of the world (the bad guys are BAD, no ambiguity), some clunky dialogue and repetitive themes e.g. constantly pointing out how non noble Gavin can be (his eating does sound awful).

Others have found this book complex and multi layered, which I have to disagree with; this is a fun yarn with some ideas that keep it interesting but it is pretty straight forward.

Despite these problems, I will probably read the sequel but from the library.
