Book Description

6 May 2004 VMC

Inspired by a grisly discovery in the nineteenth century, The King's General was the first of du Maurier's novels to be written at Menabilly, the model for Manderley in Rebecca. Set in the seventeenth century, it tells the story of a country and a family riven by war, and features one of fiction's most original heroines.

Honor Harris is only eighteen when she first meets Richard Grenvile, proud, reckless - and utterly captivating. But following a riding accident, Honor must reconcile herself to a life alone. As Richard rises through the ranks of the army, marries and makes enemies, Honor remains true to him, and finally discovers the secret of Menabilly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Escape to the Country! 5 Dec 2005
Format:Paperback
You can feel the Cornish weather all around you as you become absorbed into the lives and loves of those caught up in the Civil War. The heroine, Honor Harris is a brilliant characture, who tells the story from her bed in the twilight of her life. If you like stories that suck you in, you'll love this one. The good guys are just ordinary everyday country folk, and the bad guys are, well - that would be telling! You dont need to be a history buff to relive those dark, brooding years leading up to the English Civil War. Du Maurier has that knack of just picking you up and droping you seemlessly into the action. As you read, just keep one ear open for the clatter of horses hooves on the cobbles...

4.0 out of 5 stars The King's General 6 July 2009
By Mrs M
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A re-discovered classic! Has all the right ingredients for a satisfying historical romance yet also bears the hallmark of a fine literary writer. The story of Honor and Richard Grenville's love over 20 years is gripping, bittersweet and realistic and the descriptions of the Cornish landscape and weather are superb. This is a story to throw at your teenage daughter and say "Forget Twightlight! Read some REAL fiction!" Ideal writing for advanced young readers who have grown out of teen fiction and crave something adult yet without gratuitous sex. A story that lingers in the imagination for weeks afterwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb reading of this Classic 6 Jan 2004
Format:Audio Cassette|Amazon Verified Purchase
Juliet Stevenson's reading is faultless, and one is immediately absorbed into the story and all it's wonderfully described characters. Based in Pre and Civil War Cornwall, it enters into the Lives of the great Families involved, with their own stories, together with the main characters of the Heroine [Honor Harris] and Hero/Villain Sir Richard Grenville. Daphne du Maurier has woven a wonderful tale based on actual people, families and fact [there is also a postscript to give the listener the Fate of those involved]. The reading is unabridged at 13hrs.10mins.on 10 cassettes. This one of my favourite audiobooks, and never tire of it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED both for the Reading, quality and of course the story of the Rashleigh Family and all involved at Menabilly, the Home of daphne du Maurier, who became fascinated and intrigued with Menabilly, and it's own history when she first took residence there. In the postscript is a chilling revelation about the 'Buttressed Room'.A must for sheer escapism and History.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most unusual love story 8 Feb 2009
By Misfit TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Set during the English Civil War of the 1640's, du Maurier retells a lesser known bit of Cornish history as an elderly Honor Harris reflects back on her life and love. Wooed by the charming, irascible but extremely flawed Richard Grenvile, eighteen year old Honor loses her heart and prepares to marry Richard until an accident permanently cripples her from the waist down. Richard and Honor separate, but meet years later during the Civil War as he is now the King's General in the West as they fight the Parliamentarian rebels - although not all the Royalists think too highly of Richard's high-handed approach to prisoners and discipline. While Honor refuses to marry Richard, her feelings for him are as strong as before and they begin a most unusual relationship as the tides of war ebb and flow around them.

Honor takes up residence at Menabilly, the family home of Honor's brother-in-law Jonathan Rashleigh and things soon begin to go bump in the night in typical du Maurier fashion - mysterious comings and goings, a secret door, a mystery floorboard in the summerhouse and..... well more than that, I'm not telling - read it for yourself. du Maurier once again weaves a magical tale, albeit this time with real-life characters. The dialogue between Richard and Honor sizzles off the pages, as does the enmity between Honor and Richard's sister - and boy can those two swap some memorable barbs. The scene where those two sat and played at cards and witty repartee as the rebels sacked Menabilly to its bare walls was just brilliant, as was the bit when Richard over indulged in dinner and wine and called the troops back after retiring - simply priceless.

All in all a very unusual love story and an interesting glimpse at a footnote in Cornish history.
