This is the third instalment of Glen Scrivener's "King's English" series of daily devotionals, published in four parts over the course of 2012.

"The King's English" started life in 2011 as a daily online blog, which on each day of the year discussed a different phrase which has entered into the English language via the King James Bible (which was, of course, 400 years old in 2011). That blog has now been turned into book (and Kindle) form, for those of us who still prefer our daily devotional to be something we can pick up in our hands.

The previous instalment (April-June) just got into the New Testament a week before its daily readings finished. This third instalment therefore concentrates entirely on the four Gospels - the reading for 1st July is John 1:35-51, and that for 30 September is Matthew 21:12-17. Along the way we take in such phrases as "Blessed are the peacemakers"; "The salt of the earth"; "Turn the other cheek"; "Judge not, that ye be not judged"; "Do unto others..."; "Prodigal son"; and many more.

Each day's reading can be read in about five minutes (plus reading the Bible passage, naturally!), so it's quite a manageable exercise to read this over a three-month period.

The strength of this volume is in getting us to view some of the most famous passages in the Gospels - The Parable of the Sower, the Sermon on the Mount, the Prodigal Son - in ways we might never have read them before. After all, the Sermon on the Mount is a lesson in how to be good... or is it? The Prodigal Son is all about how God welcomes sinners with open arms... or is it? The Good Samaritan is all about how we should do good even to people we don't know... isn't it?!
