Product Description

What would you sacrifice for love? Nyx, the sea king's youngest daughter, detests her underwater palace; she yearns for the sunlit world above the waves. After the young mermaid rescues a human from drowning, she is determined to be with him at any cost. But life on land is not at all as she dreamed, and the price of happiness may be higher than she ever imagined. Love and heartbreak intertwine in this breathtakingly romantic retelling of "The Little Mermaid" -- a classic story that comes to life in "The Sea King's Daughter".

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story... 10 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this book without any expectations, i didn't even read the synopsis. I haven't read Hans Christian Andersen - The Little Mermaid, so i can't comment there :/

Going in without any expectations i was fairly surprised. It was a short read, lasted a few hours. Nyx was an interesting character being impulsive and with a rebellious streak... I didn't like the other character Lysander(was that his name?) not sure why, just rubbed me the wrong way..

I liked his Mom and Nyx Sister Thetis... The other characters are hardly protrayed in the story and that is a shame, i wished they had more interaction and more depth.

<WARNING OF POSSIBLE SPOILER>

As for the ending... I'm personally glad it wasn't 'fairy-tale' ending where everything worked out alright... Does this book end of a good or bad note.. I honestly don't know, its a matter of interpretation.. I mean she does find somewhere where she belongs in the end, but it also kind of a sad ending so im calling the ending neutral.

The ending of the story was abrupt... I wished they were more detailed ending.. I wanted read and to see Lysander come to the realization that Nyx was the one wom saved him. I wanted to him to know all that she has sacrificed, including her life at the end. I wanted to see Nyx 'father' perhaps curse Lysander for him and his children to never be safe at sea, that may sound extreme and unreasonable but he's grieving and it something i could see happening in that situation. Finally i wanted to see Lysander fall to his knee's in remorse when reality comes crashing down on him (or something)

Thats just a mini rant... I just wished the ended was expanded upon.. Overall i recommend this book.. It's free and enjoyable, you have little to lose except time.

Not quite what I was expecting from the childhood expectation, but really enjoyed this story!

Kept me pulled in and connected with the characters, shame about the ending though!

3.0 out of 5 stars Hans Christian Andersen anyone? 14 July 2012

Nyx; the youngest daughter of the sea king, travels to the surface world far earlier than she should. At 14 she takes her first breath of air, and soon afterwards she is saving a handsome human boy from drowning and falling in love with him. Nyx risks everything for the opportunity to swap her tail for legs and find this young man, discovering in her new form that every step is agony and her beloved sea now poisonous to her.

She finds Lysander, and just when it seems he may at last reciprocate her feelings, he falls in love with someone else. Nyx can do nothing as his wedding day approaches, and when given the opportunity to return to her home in the sea, she instead makes the ultimate sacrifice for a young man that never really felt anything more for her than a sibling like affection.

I always found "The Little Mermaid" to be a sad story with a somewhat depressing ending and "The Sea King's Daughter" follows the original plot faithfully. I knew that this was a retelling of a classic fairy tale but expected something a little different with its own flair of originality. Apart from swapping the prince for a wealthy merchant's son and adding a little twist into Nyx's parentage, TSKD is almost a carbon copy of the HCA story.
