From the Republic of Benin, West Africa, The Orchestre Poly-Rythmo are one of Africa’s least-known big-bands outside of their home country. A mixture of hard Afro-funk, driving Afro-beat, deep Afro-latin and Cuban grooves all with a unique flavour that ruled the dance-floors of '70s urban Benin. Re-mastered and available for the first time outside of Africa, packed with sleeve notes history and original artwork and all laid out over a 16 page booklet. Tracks: Aihe Ni Kpe we / Les Djos / Hwe Towe Hun / Gendamou Na Wili We Gnannin / Mi Si Ba To / Avoun Doupou Me Douga / Kokoriko / Ne Te Faches Pas / Kou Tche Kpo So O / Gbeto Vive / Agnon Djidjo / Medida / Angelina II.

Excellent African Groove-Funk Music 3 May 2008
By T. Sacco - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Kings of Benin is a diverse and exceptional sampling of 1970s African-style R&B. T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo's style varies from funk to disco to R&B. The music features stellar bass lines, an amazing horn section (it's a ten-member band), inventive keyboards, and layers of thumping drums driving the beat. It's got Latin flavor & Tito Puente influences, but it is distinctly African. This is great background music for an outdoor party, a vacation or anytime you want an exotic and different choice of music. Get this CD--you will like it.

The Sun Ra Arkestra of Africa? 2 Nov 2009
By T. Boves - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
African Sun Ra Arkestra? Well... that wouldn't be fair to say: the Orchestre may have been innovative, but never was Avant Garde and it probably had much less influence on the scene. . There are some similarities though: a vast catalogue of records issued in small numbers, and a core of members that have been loyal to the band for decades even if money was not allways available.

I have been listening to music from the west coast of Africa for more than 20 years but the T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rhytmo has expanded my horizon. Highly recommended if you're into jazz, world music, funk and soul and have an eye for the not so mainstream.
