4.0 out of 5 stars A Promising Debut But A Bit Slow-Moving! 6 April 2009
By Bobbewig TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
John Hart's first novel is well-written, engrossing, has a moderately suspenseful plot and is rich in character development. Hart's writing style in many ways reminds me of Scott Turow's. The King Of Lie's plot basically revolves around the lawyer, Jackson Workman ("Work") Pickens, whose life is deeply affected by the earlier death of his mother and from the mystery surrounding the disappearance of his father, with whom "Work" is in partnership. As a result, Pickens's law practice and personal life is in shambles. "Work's" life changes dramatically with the discovery of his father's murdered body. Hart demonstrates considerable potential in The King Of Lies, yet, it is not without flaws. While the characters are richly developed, they are mostly emotionally scarred and somewhat whiney; thus becoming somewhat annoying and making me not care too much about them. As a consequence, my overall liking of the book was less than it could have been and I, at times, found the plotting to be slow-moving. Further, without going into detail, Hart leaves some "threads untied", such as about what happens to the homeless man who helps Pickens, and what were the motivations of the female detective for deciding to pursue Pickens from the onset with such vehemence. Despite these flaws, Hart is clearly a very talented writer. I definitely plan to read his second book, Down River, as well as his upcoming book, The Last Child.

4.0 out of 5 stars King of Lies 1 Nov 2009
By Inemac
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I so enjoyed reading John Hart's 'Down River' for the content and his writing style, I decided to find out whether he was just as good in an earlier book. I was not disappointed. He keeps the momentum of his story at all times.

4.0 out of 5 stars great read 31 May 2009

Format:Paperback
I enjoyed this book, not as much as down river or last child, also by John Hart, but it is still an excellent book all the same.
Well written, easy to read keeps your interest through out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thumping good read! 5 July 2010
Format:Paperback
I'm another fan who picked this up cheaply at a book sale and came straight to Amazon to find out what else John Hart has written. I'm just about to order "Down River" and "The Last Child" on the strength of this one.

If you enjoy reading thrillers that go beyond courtroom thrillers containing two-dimensional characters (Mr Grisham, I'm looking at you), then this book is for you. Despite the bleakness of many of the relationships there's a warmth, a sympathy in Hart's writing about them that I especially enjoyed. I think the author likes people and it shows in his work. Talking of which...

The only (teeny-weeny!) nitpick I have is with the main character's name ("Work") - I know it's a silly thing to get hung up on but it bothered me for the first chapter or so until I got into the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Engaging Mystery 24 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The King of Lies is an intriguing crime drama surrounding the family life of Jackson (Work) Pickens. Work is a lawyer living in the shadow of his immensely successful, rags to riches, father. The two share a law practice but all of Work's life choices have been dictated by his father's expectations rather than what he himself wants. When his father is murdered, Work becomes the prime suspect and his life implodes. More used to burying his head in the sand, he is now forced to face both his collapsing marriage and his relationship with his mentally unstable sister. The novel is a mixture of crime,as Work tries to unravel the truth about his father's murder and family drama. I enjoyed both sides of the story and found myself engaged with all of the characters who surround Work. However, sometimes Work is a little bit too selfish and whiney particularly where his girl friend Vanessa is concerned. I found her character to be slightly unrealistic in the way she lets him ride roughshod all over her and would like to have seen her developed into a more believable character. I would definitley recommend this novel though especially if you like a mystery with a bit of a twist.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard "Work" at times.
Work is a wet character but perhaps that's the point. He gets taken advantage of by his dad and his wife so he needs to be a bit of a mug. Read more
