Product Description

Product Description

If anyone warranted assassination during World War II, the man to know was Reinhard Heydrich (19041942)chief of the security police, rabid anti-Semite, architect of the Final Solution, ruthless overlord of Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, and Hitler's most likely successor. In 1941, at the height of the Nazi's seeming invincibility, the Czech government-in-exile launched a desperate operation to kill Heydrich. From the assassins' training in England to their Thermopylae-like last stand in the flooded crypt of a Prague church, and the Nazi's savage reprisals (including the obliteration of two villages), The Killing of Reinhard Heydrich brilliantly recounts one of World War II's most daring and tragic missions.

Amazing courage. 22 Oct 1998

Format:Paperback
Justly called the "Butcher of Prague", Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich was perhaps the most dangerous man in the world in 1942.
Combining an undeniable intelligence and political skill with an utter lack of scruples, Hitler's chief of security police, had he lived to succeed the Fuhrer, might have proved an even more formidable opponent for the Allies than his predecessor. For this reason and others more immediate, he had to be removed.
The story of the desperate suicide mission by Czech and Slovak patriots is thoroughly researched and well told here, in this most complete account of the assassination and the tragic consequences that shocked the world. Highly recommended for students of World War II and particularly those interested in Czechoslovakian affairs. (The "score" rating is an unfortunately ineradicable feature of the page. This reviewer does not "score" books.)

I suppose MacDonald has written the ultimate book on Heydrich's assassination because there's not much more to tell. The book covers the German entrance into Czechoslovakia, Heydrich rise to the SS-top and the ideas of the Czech government in exile. Only in the final part the actual assault takes place, but by this time the reader has good knowledge of all the circumstances.

This gripping story never let's go and is a tribute to all of those who stood up against Nazi evil, personified in Heydrich, and especially to the brave Czechs carrying this action out. The only option to improve this read is to publish it in a more worthy edition: the font looks a bit old and the pictures, which seem to show a lot, are blurred. But don't let this prevent you from reading it!

As an account of the assassination plot, the killing and the aftermath, this book leaves no more to be said. It dispels a few hoary old tales about how the plot evolved, and brings out important details concerning the exiled Czechoslovak government's role. Some readers might like more on just how shockingly evil Heydrich was, but, to be fair, this is not a biography.
