CD Description

Black Moth are four super talented individuals, Harriet Bevan - vocals, Jim Swainston - guitar, Dave Vachon - bass, and Dom McCready, battering the cr*p out of his drums. Formed 2 years ago out of the ashes of Leeds garage rockers The Bacchae, the band were seduced by the brutal and hypnotic lure of the riff, to emerge translucent skinned and bleary eyed from their cocoon as the ferocious kick-as* heavy rock outfit that is Black Moth (see attached scan). Taking a powerful chunk of influence from proto-punk acts such as Iggy and the Stooges, Motorhead and early Alice Cooper as well as a sliver of 90s grunge and stoner rock and a big dose of doom, Black Moth draw out the darker elements and combine them with the heaving riffs of heavy metal giants, Pentagram and Black Sabbath, with "hooks so sharp you could hang a corpse on them". They also look to more current acts such as the Melvins, Sleep and Electric Wizard for inspiration, though singer, Harriet Bevan, still maintains a vocal style that evokes the haunting psychedelia of Grace Slick and psych-Satanist, Jinx Dawson from Coven: the woman responsible for the "sign of the horns" in rock'n'roll. They're also a big part of the burgeoning Leeds heavy rock scene alongside Pulled Apart By Horses, Kong, Hawk Eyes and Gentlemen's Pistorls, it looks like it's about to break. Songs that the band have honed and crafted in the mighty maelstrom that is the Leeds heavy rock scene, have been rippin em up live not only in Yorkshire but everywhere they ve played. Now all they needed was to be brought to vivid screaming life on record. Enter Mr Jim Sclavunos, the multi talented Grinderman and Bad Seed, not to mention the superbaaad connoisseur of the mixing console, fresh from producing the storming second Jim Jones Revue album. One of their shows was all it took. Black Moth reminds me of my misspent youth he said. And judging by the all out assault that he s crafted with the Moth, he must have been a very bad boy indeed. The Killing Jar is their debut from New Heavy Sounds and it rocks like a bastard. The band have upcoming gigs at the Live at Leeds Festival, Camden Crawl (they will be made artist of the day on the Camden Crawl website), Great Escape in Brighton plus album launch shows in Leeds and London all timed around the release of the album. Press : Artrocker, Dawn of the Deaf, Beard Rock, Front Magazine, Shout For Music, Classic Rock, Louder Than War, Thrash Hits, The Quietus - feature running in April, Wears the Trousers - feature running in April, Caught in the Cross Fire, The Sleeping Shamen, Terrorizer, Metal Hammer, NME - band were included in DZ Deathrays feature, Rhythm Magazine - featured confirmed for May.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Moth - The Killing Jar 26 May 2012
By Gentlegiantprog TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
2012's The Killing Jar is the debut full-length studio album from the British band Black Moth.

Mixing all the best parts of the Doom, Desert, Stoner, Grunge and Fuzz ends of the spectrum, their sound is a brilliant amalgamation of many other bands, and yet always like Black Moth. Sometimes they have a bit of a psychedelic vibe, sometimes they have melodic pop sensibilities and sometimes they lean hard on the riffs and just go really heavy. In writing it may sound like a million other bands, but like Dozer's later work they have somehow managed to forge a unique identity in a crowded scene.

Basically, if you like any sort of bands like Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Dozer, Electric Wizard, QOTSA, Sleep, Monster Magnet, Goatsnake, Solarized, Sheavy, Baroness, Kylesa, Pentagram, Reverend Bizarre, Clutch, Josh Homme era Arctic Monekys and of course Black Sabbath, then you'll know the vague direction to expect from Black Moth. If you like a few of them, then you should probably check out Black Moth, they provide a nice twist on that general sound.

Singer Harriet Bevan's vocals provide a lot of character, mixing the sort of tortured-psychedelic female vocal style from the late 60s with Ozzy's style and also a healthy bit of 90s Grunge as well. Over the course of the album she covers a lot of ground and like the music, slides between different ends of the same spectrum well, creating a strong whole.

As an album The Killing Jar is strong and consistent, its not overlong, its not too short and the dirty grimy production is perfect for this sort of music. Highlights include the `Spit Out Your Teeth,' which starts off hypnotic and then rides off in an odd direction as well as the beefy `The Plague Of Our Age,' the initially slow and doomy then catchy/poppy `Plastic Blaze' and also the album closer `Honey Lung.'

In summary; If you like this sort of music then Black Moth are an excellent proposition and The Killing Jar is a damn fine debut album; its dirty, its varied and it doesn't get boring. If you still need convincing, as a test, listen to the song 'Land Of The Sky' online, and if it puts a big smile on your face then you'll know that you should get yourself a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars sublime dirty grunge 14 May 2012

lovely dirty grungy grinding riffs, with an almost pop sensibility. Trying to think who they most remind me off, and i think its Black Sabbath or Soundgarden if Chris Cornell or Ozzy were ladies. Perhaps Courtney love fronting Alice in Chains? either way this is splendid stuff.

Saw these guys open DesertFest and they were great, this album didn't disappoint. They remind me of Black Sabbath, Melvins and Acid King but got a sound all to there own. Def check this album out if your a fan of Brit Stoner and if you can, check them out live.
