"A hell of a book, a brutal page-turner."--Larry King
"We've all read novelists and true crime writers who try to put you inside-the-mind-of-the-serial-killer, but I can't remember one that succeeded with the physical and psychological intimacy of this collaboration between the writer and the killer himself.""New York Press"
"I couldn't put the book down. The details are amazing, told from many points of view; very scary indeed."--"Los Angeles Times"
"Carlo has given us an astonishing portrait of a killer not seen since "In Cold Blood.""--Denis Hamill, "New York Daily News"

Brave Offering 20 Oct 2010
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Having read a couple of his other titles, I expected something more about the serial killer angle rather than a title based more on the author. That said, it's fascinating to see how he copes day to day with his illness as well bringing his experiences to the fore. It's a brave offering from the author and one that will hopefully get the readers to understand things a little clearer. If however you want a book more on serial killers and understanding them then this perhaps isn't the best title for you and I refer to you some of Philip's earlier works instead.

I've read the authors previous work and found this very self indulgent. I know thats a bit harsh of a man dying from an incurable disease, but this dragged on and on... I grew very bored with it.

He comes across as a bit of a male chauvinist, I'm not saying thats a fault that should affect his writing, just a character flaw that I found quite irritating, along with the rest of the book. There were no real further insights in to the characters he had met. I just felt very sorry for man, and this felt like a last pay day.

I didnt even get to the end of it. Maybe thats a fault of mine, but I suspect it was the tedium of the book.

This is a book about growing up with the mafia quite literally next door, about a descendant of emigrants going back to his Italian roots, about becoming a writer, about the authors' life and problems while the book is written, and about a fight to live a life in spite of a debilitating illness. Lou Gehrig's Disease or ALS. The pieces are woven together in what somehow feels like a natural order, and with some humor and a few surprises thrown in.

The book is written with a clearer and more personal voice than Carlos' other books. However, if you want to read a detailed account of some criminals' activities, pick another one of his books.
