Product Description

This extraordinary book-plus kit comprises a deck of richly illustrated transformation cards, designed by award-winning artist and illustrator Tony Meeuwissen, plus an accompanying book of corresponding verses Transformation cards or decks of playing cards in which conventional suit signs were transformed into fanciful designs, originated in 18th century Europe. The Key to the Kingdom recreates this clever conceit with aweinspiring flair and inventiveness. Both the book, and the fabulously illustrated deck of cards, draw on traditional nursery rhymes and riddles for inspiration. Meuwissen's luminous artwork is rich in visual and literary puns which tease the brain and delight the eye. This is truly a one-of-a kind masterwork from a brilliant artist with an incredible imagination.

The Key to the Kingdom: An Enchanted Deck of Transformation Playing Cards (Running Press Book Plus Kits)

This is a hard product to categorise. It is a box set comprising a deck of playing cards (full deck, you can play card games with them if you like) and a hardback book with an illustrated plate of each card on the right hand page and an accompanying rhyme or poem on the left. The poems and cards are nursery rhyme in feel, but with a slightly dark feeling, like the best Grimm's fairy tales, or maybe Tim Burton.
The product quality is top notch, the illustrations are compelling and fascinating, and without exception are beautifully executed and the rhymes and the images are humourously appealing.

I stumbled across my set in my middle teens, and could not resist it. I've looked it up on Amazon now to purchase another set for a gift for a girl of a similar age as there is no way I would give away my set! I think it makes a wonderful and very original gift.

Here's something genuinely intriguing and exquisite; within a sturdy slipcase is housed a neat little hardcover book and a deck of `transformation' playing cards.

Each card depicts a beautiful, if sometimes eerie, design which ingeniously incorporates the suite into the pictures; the Three of Clubs, for instances, becomes the Three Blind Mice scurrying across a tabletop. The entire deck is given this treatment, with each card being unique.

The book reproduces each card face, page by page, accompanied by an appropriate piece of short, witty prose or poetry.

Together both elements make for a very high quality, beautifully crafted and very enigmatic item. As much a work of art as a book and the perfect gift for a loved one, but once The Key to the Kingdom is in your hands you might not want to part with it!

Tony is a genius of symbolic art. The thought and detail of each card is unique and supurb. I enjoyed the poetry of the book and those Poets I recognized and those I didn't. A great present to give... even to yourself.
