Praise and reviews for The Key of Kilenya:
“The Key of Kilenya is full of adventure and wonderful, mythical-type creatures—totally unique. This book is like Fablehaven meets Harry Potter with a sprinkling of Lord of the Rings. A good, fun, clean read for the whole family.” – Jennifer Hurst

“As a mother, it's refreshing to know there are authors writing fantasy, like The Key of Kilenya, that is not dark and depressing.” – Kimberly Job

“Andrea balances excitement with thought, external conflict with inner, and adds just the right mix of mystery and realism.” – Karen Hoover

“This is the beginning of a middle grade series that is sure to be great. Both youths and adults will enjoy The Key of Kilenya.” – Jewel Adams

"To be quite honest, I don't usually read books in this genre. However, I loved Harry Potter so I took a chance and I have to admit, I liked it! A lot!" - Mandi Slack

"Overall, like the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling, I would most certainly say this book is worth multiple reads." - Reviewer

"It is an adventure filled ride that is perfect for middle grade students who love action and science fiction." - Cindy

"The fantastical elements really feel original. In fact, reading this put me in mind of the creatures you would come across in Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis, because the creatures really aren't the norm." - Lisa

"I love the Harry Potter references, as a typical teen has most definitely become familiar with those books." Heidi - Goodreads Reviewer

"As in Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan, Harry Potter by JK Rowling, Fablehaven by Brandon Mull and other great books, a teenage boy lives an ordinary life while another world thinks he's something special... It's gripping all the way through." - Patricia

"Get this book. You won't be disappointed unless you have no imagination and don't like books such as the Harry Potter series (JK Rowling), Fablehaven (Brandon Mull), Percy Jackson (Rick Riordan) or movies like Stardust, etc." - Karl, Reviewer

"Similar to Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series, this is just a very fun, creative, exciting adventure!" - Debra

"The story has many twists and turns and loads of suspense throughout it and will keep the reader fascinated from start to finish. Reminded me of the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan and Fablehaven written by Brandon Mull." - Karen

"If you like books written by award winning authors such as Brandon Mull (Fablehaven, Beyonders) and Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson), than you will LOVE 'The Key of Kilenya.'" - Sarah

"I love the Fablehaven books by Brandon Mull, but the first one started slow for me. The Key of Kilenya doesn't start slow." - Rhonda Lynne Bingham

About the Author

Andrea is an avid reader and outdoor-er, who loves traveling. She and her husband (AKA Mr. Darcy) were married only a few months ago, and have settled near a river that someday will probably overflow and flood their house. It took her nearly a lifetime to do so (nine years), but she graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Communications Disorders from Brigham Young University. She plans to open a flying bicycle shop eventually, but for the time being, she is happy teaching orchestra to elementary students.

More About the Author

Andrea, a Brigham Young University graduate, is an avid reader and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, fishing, boating, biking, spending time in the Rocky Mountains, and taking walks). She spent a year and a half serving the Spanish speaking community in Toronto, Canada, and in total fluently speaks 2 ½ languages. She plays several instruments, not including the banjo, and loves putting together musical arrangements. Her favorite sports are basketball and football, though several knee surgeries and incurably awful coordination prevent her from playing them.

Andrea is always in the mood for a good movie with close friends and family (especially her husband and mom), with a large glass of milk and a bowl of overly buttered popcorn nearby. She also enjoys oil painting, making earrings, squeezing every bit of oxygen out of Ziploc bags, and she hopes to someday travel to Italy and Alaska.

The journey with Jacob Clark is one adventure I loved reading about. I think this story is great YA book. The storyline moves at a nice pace and the reader is constantly pulled deeper into the adventure with Jacob. The Key of Kilenya is an amazingly written story with memorable characters. Each character has a personality of their own that ends up sticking with the reader while making the reader care more about them. The adventure is well written and the storyline provides readers of all ages with imagination and action packed details.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the first beta-readers 2 July 2011

How can I start?

I LOVE this book. Well, except for one problem I found: It is too short. But being a YA fantasy with a target audience of 12+, which I fall into being in my late 50's, I guess the length is something to be expected.

I have been involved in the writing of this book since nearly the beginning, or at least the beginning of the physical copy when the first drafts were done. I've been a beta reader, and doing that was very cool because I got to watch the book grow from a finished concept, to a finished young-adult fantasy.

The story grabs the reader from the beginning, which has been one of my major complaints with other books. I want to know why I'm reading a book when I start, not 5 chapters into it.

For instance, I love the Fablehaven books by Brandon Mull, but the first one started slow for me. The Key of Kilenya doesn't start slow.

I heartily recommend this book for these reasons:

1. It starts fast
2. It has a main character just about any young (or old) person can relate to
3. It is an easy read with a story-line that makes sense (from a fantasy point of view)
4. It has zero profanity or sexual inuendo
5. It has real families and characters showing families that care for each other
6. It brings the past and present together demonstrating that the author knows where the series is going. It also doesn't make you wonder about some of the main points. She explains things so you understand enough to want more.

And other things I can't think of...

Get this book. You won't be disappointed unless you have no imagination and don't like books such as the Harry Potter series, Fablehaven, Percy Jackson or movies like Stardust, etc. (I don't like that Stardust has illegitimacy in it, but...)

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Was AMAZING! 1 Aug 2011

My 14 year old son and I LOVED this book! We both found Key of Kilenya gripping from the start. Dalen, especially couldn't stop once he'd started. It was hilarious to watch him do his chores with one hand, while reading from the kindle with the other. He'd even walk slowly up and down the stairs while reading it. Any book that he finds that fascinating deserves a five star review.

You will be blown away through the unique twists and turns of Andrea Pearson's new world. Where fierce unimaginable creatures roam and excitement and adventure await at every turn. Dalen says, "It's clearly one of the most addicting books I've ever read, now where's the sequel? There better be a sequel!" Yes, he's already offered to be her beta reader. Lol! Isn't he sweet?

No, really. We were both amazed at the talent and ingenuity Andrea possesses.

I personally found Andrea's descriptive imagery to have just the right touch. Engrossing and magical, yet, not too bogged down. We had just enough facts to create the world within our own minds... beautiful and just enough action to keep us on the edge of our seats... or in Dalen's case, the kindle at the edge of our fingertips!

For a debut novel, I'm impressed. If you'd like a great read this summer, or know of a boy who seems a little bored. Order it and pass over your kindle! You'll be glad you did. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 3 July 2011

The Key to Kilenya is a great read. I felt invested in Jacob Clark by the end of the first chapter and had to read on. The book moved along at a great pace. I read it with my 14 year son and 11 year old daughter and they both loved it. Andrea Pearson did a great job creating another world. Her descriptions and character development were clear and easy to follow along. We are anxiously waiting for the series to unfold. You won't go wrong buying this book. It's for all ages & gender.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book 24 Feb 2013

The Key to Kilenya is the first book in the Kilenya Series by Andrea Pearson. The main character, Jacob Clark, is a fourteen year old whose main aspiration in life is to do well enough at the upcoming basketball tryouts to be selected for the school team. As the story opens, little does he know that his life is about to change drastically. In fact, so much so that basketball tryouts will become the furthest thing from his mind. As Jacob and Matt, (Jake's sixteen year old brother) finish up a game of one-on-one wolves come out of the woods behind their house. Jake takes off running in order to lead the wolves away from his little sister who is playing in the back yard. By the time he stops running he is lost and can't find his way back home. The next thing he knows he is faced with dangers previously unimaginable to him. He also meets a group of "beings" who inform him that his help is needed to find the Key to Kilenya which had been stolen from them. The adventures he has along the way make for a compelling, action packed, can't put it down story.
There were so many things I really liked about the way the author has portrayed Jacob. He strikes me as a typical fourteen year old who although he is self-confident, he still displays a bit of timidity and shyness. This is very noticeable both when he is told that he needs to be the one to rescue the Key to Kilenya, and when he meets Aloren, a female not much older than himself who will be accompanying him and his companions on their trek. In the ways of talking with girls he is a novice and wishes Matt were there as he would be much more confident and self-assured in this type of social situation. The way the author developed, slowly, the relationship between Jacob and Aloren was not only plausible but also logical considering the challenges each faces as seek to achieve their individual objectives .
One additional thing I enjoyed about this book is the creativity and imaginativeness the author used to develop the many different characters both good and bad. What an imagination to develop so many different types of characters, each with their own unique characteristics.
As a Fifth grade teacher I require my students to read a minimum of 30 books per school year. In order to do so I must be available as a resource for them to come to for good book recommendations. It was with this in mind that I picked up this book. Having read it in four days I will certainly recommend it. I found it to be one of those that you just can't put down. The only concern I have is that they may find it to be the same way for them and then I'll have the difficult task of getting them to put it away when they need to be working on other things in class. This book was definitely well worth the time spent reading it and I look forward to continuing the series with The Ember Gods.

Finally, a book that a mother or grandmother can buy for her children and not have to worry about what's in it! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, and would highly recommend it! Can't wait to read the rest of the series!
