Amazon.co.uk Review

Karma is a concept which is often misunderstood in the West. "It is not about fate, fatalism or destiny" explains Dr. Jonn Mumford, nor has it anything to do with "concepts of God's judgement, punishment, pain or penalty. This is not an "eye for an eye; tooth for a tooth" creed but a holistic doctrine that synthesises human beings and cosmic law. "Karma gives us a reason for everything and everything for a reason. Karma, as a philosophy maintains hope in the midst of hopelessness and provides us with the courage to continue our personal evolution." Dr. Jonn Mumford is a master of Eastern disciplines. He is a direct disciple of Yogarishi Dr Swami Gitananda of South India, and Paramhansa Swami Satyananda Saraswati of Bihar, India, by whom he was initiated in 1973. A renowned authority on Tantra and yoga, a physician and lecturer, Dr. Mumford is eminently qualified to disseminate the complexities of Karma. And he does so, clearly and simply in the 12 easy-to-read chapters of the Karma Manual. Within them you'll discover the different types of Karma, the concepts of action and reaction, duty and reincarnation and the wealth and depth of Karmic law. At the end of each chapter there's a "Karma Processing Factory" that is a practical exercise to encourage release and transformation; and the final chapter is a nine-day programme designed to cleanse your mind, body and spirit of negative forces. You'll also find a comprehensive glossary and a short but useful bibliography. Overall, the Karma Manual is contemporary and relevant and an essential guide for the Western student. --Lucas LoBlack

Fantastic 5 July 2000
By Reckless Consumer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book has truly helped me to change my life for the better (and it wasn't too bad to begin with!)....As a skeptic and a Western thinker, I found this book appealing and not too "new age-y", which helped me to understand and appreciate it more. I absolutely love the organized layout of the book. Each chapter teaches a short lesson, then an exercise following the lesson helps you to process what you've learned. The exercises taught me so much about myself and the way I think. The last chapter of the book outlines a "Karma Clearing Program". For 9 days, you practice certain behaviors, such as not verbally expressing dissatisfaction, not criticizing anyone, paying special attention to your thoughts and feelings and waking an hour earlier to meditate and engage in physical activity, among others. The author lays out how to perform each behavior, and what the specific benefits are of each. After reading the book and going through the short program (which I did not do perfectly), I am more relaxed, more focused, sleep better, and am more conscious of what comes out of my mouth. This is a book I will have to buy for myself again and again...my relatively new copy is already worn out!

Use force, Luke! 9 Jan 2000
By Anaree Nelson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Dr Mumford has done it again! His eloquent and entertaining way of guiding us through our own labyrinth of fears and out into the bright light of understanding is easily comprehensible to all. Karma is like a force - we unwittingly 'force' others to treat us a certain way. To step out of that pattern and become aware is a great achievement. The word karma is seen more as a past tense noun (although it is a verb), but seen from the Christian viewpoint, it is expressed as "It is done unto you as you believe", and "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" - this is present and future tense, which is how we should see karma. Karma is something we have brought with us to this moment, and it is our decision, with each breath, what we take to the next moment, or breath. Breathe light into your energy flow - use the Karma Manual to deliver your love.

Could have offered more 19 July 2002
By kyara - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
While this book has a lot of valuable content for those seeking both to understand all about karma and change their life based on a specific Eastern philosophy, Dr. Mumford could have gone a lot further to make it more meaningful, more applicable and more valuable.

The book is in two main parts. The first part explains the meaning of karma with exercises to help us be aware of the message of each section and how it relates to the reader personally. The second part is the 9-day gkarma clearingh plan, during which one should do devoid of any news or other media intrusion, eat one meal a day, not criticize, not communicate dissatisfaction, arise earlier and meditate, do something you do not want to do, do a selfless act, and observe our thoughts and actions. This will help you attune to yourself to your karma and help you understand more clearly what is important to you and what you want to do with your life.

The author admits that the 9-day plan is nearly impossible to achieve, he himself only having done it once. However, karma affects us each and every day. If this book had addressed this in some depth in addition to the 9-day plan, it certainly would have earned five stars instead of three.
