Book Description

This updated version is divided into two parts. The first is an introduction to the sport, which places judo in its historical context, introduces the conventions and etiquettes and covers the basic skills. It follows with contests procedures and scoring, with details of training and diet. The second part is a manual, which illustrates the whole Gokyo of throwing techniques. All the throws are analysed, with two-colour diagrams revealing the secrets of success. With sections on women's judo, junior competitors and injuries, this is a practical handbook of teaching, coaching and instructions.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best one volume introductions to Judo 13 April 2009
By Kuma
Given the success of Judo and the Martial Arts in general in the UK, it is still amazing to find that the literature available to practitioners is highly limited and dificult to obtain. A particular favourite of mine has been the Judo Manual and was one of the earliest books I studied in my Judo training.

The book is getting slightly dated and does make a noticeable ommission with its lack of Kata material, which is why I view it as an introductory text. It does provide several excellent illustrated examples of the Goyko techniques in isolation as well as some now slightly outdated information on the sport. However I feel there is a lot to be said from illustrated manuals over photo based guides that are now coming into vogue as the pictures are significantly clearer to follow.

This book is especially useful for junior players looking to step up to senior judo which can be a difficult transition period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basically a cheap version of Kodokan Judo 15 April 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A great value British equivalent of the book 'Kodokan Judo'; and can I say it?.......better in my opinion. Congrats Geoff Hobbs on a simple to understand and informative judo manual that I used for my sons gradings. If your looking for deeper, more spiritual aspects of judo I would point more towards 'Higher Judo' by M.Feldenkrais or 'The Secrets of Judo' by J.Watanabe. Rating: Strong Buy.

Looks dated but the Tori Uke instructions are really useful. Plus the comments on use for competition and learning the throws.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful 7 Dec 2011
Not many Judo books available and this is the best by far. Very helpful with my recent grading and future development.
