Product Description

Life in la Juderia, the Jewish quarter of Rhodes, had its basis in the strong cultural traditions of the Sephardic Jews who settled there after fleeing the Spanish Inquisition. Nazi occupation of the island late in World War II shattered the community and forced its inhabitants into concentration camps far from home. Driven by her promise to look after a younger sister, young Laura Varon learned to cope in a world where human kindness was so rare that it could neither be trusted nor believed. One of the few survivors of Rhodes, she struggled to deal with the loss of the dead and the ghosts that haunted the living. Upon her liberation, Laura lay among corpses, ready to give up her fight. A long convalescence in Sweden would only be the beginning of her journey back toward normalcy. Gradually reunited with family, Laura must come to terms with the loss of her community and her past. Rhodes, no longer an Italian territory, cannot be the home she seeks. A fierce determination drives Laura to build a new life and to carry on the legacy of the lost Juderia of Rhodes.

After visiting Rhodes for about the tenth time I entered the Kahal Shalom synagogue there and learned much. It was there that I saw this book in which I was shocked to read of the locals jeering and shouting abuse at the Jews as they were deported to their deaths on 23rd July 1944.Under prior Turkish rule, begun 1522, which only ended when Italy gained control of Rhodes in 1912 only Turks and Jews were allowed inside the city walls after dark...NO Greeks allowed. Seeds of antisemitism thus sowed in 1522 when the Turks defeated the Knights of Rhodes. The Nazis accomplished their 'ethnic cleansing' using only SEVEN SS men led by Kurt Waldheim. (Famous name eh ? Yes, it's him !) He was assisted by Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe personnel.
ALL empires, Roman, Ottoman, British, German (3rd Reich), USSR, .....ultimately fall.
No free country has yet asked to be re-admitted to an 'empire'.

This book is amazingly expensive but worth reading. It's a testament to survival, love in unexpected places and pure will power. The author is an excellent writer and should be commended on her ability to translate her experiences in words that suck the reader in. I was up till 3am gripped by the eloquence, heartbreak and truth of her story.

Telling the story of Rhodes. 1 Aug 2000
By Scott L. Marks - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This well written book covers a personal view of the early, happy days on Rhodes, to the occupation, and subsequent deportation to Auschwitz of the Jews. Understanding what life was like for the Sephardim in the camp, and what the moment of liberation, and aftermath felt like. All this through the eyes of a "Rhodeslis" survivor. A tremendous and powerful story, one that will make you sad, but one that needs not to be forgotten.

An important Holocaust memoir 22 Sep 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is not easy to read. Laura Varon goes into excruciating detail about the horrors she faced at the hands of the Nazis. But it is an important Holocaust memoir, one that should be read to realize the atrocities that took place five decades ago. It cements in history the details of the lost Jewish population from the Greek island of Rhodes.
