Synopsis

This is the new novel in the popular "Hawkenlye" series. May 1199: a party of five from Hawkenlye Abbey is summoned to the Ile d'Oleron by Queen Eleanor and have journeyed hundreds of miles for more than three weeks to reach their destination. The queen has summoned Abbess Helewise and her party to discuss the building of a chapel at the abbey, dedicated to the well-being of the soul of her dear son King Richard. Meanwhile Sir Josse d'Acquin receives secret orders of a very different kind that set him on the trail of a group of mysterious knights rumoured to be devil worshippers. As Helewise heads for home, Josse follows his quarry to Chartres, where at night in the shadows of the new cathedral he meets the last person he expects to find there: Joanna. And she has grave problems of her own...

Bad ending 5 Aug 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book was excellent, until the end!
Having Helewise coming to terms with her church, and the journeys of Sir Josse to France, and all the drama of the goddess and the tension with de Loup was fantastic, that is why I have rated it 3 stars.
But then it went to the end. I won't spoil it but when you get to the bit where it says '10 years later' it is ridiculous, it would never happen!
Spoiled it for me totally. Until then it was fantastic, like the other books. So only 3 stars for this one, the others have always been 5 star.

The End of An Era! 24 Feb 2009
By ''Sam''
Format:Hardcover
Although sad to feel that this could be the last Hawkenlye book, I couldn't stop myself from reading this story in one sitting! It gave me the feeling that Alys Clare had planned out the whole series before evr she wrote the first one! All are entrancing but this one draws all the characters together in an enjoyable way. The fate of Joanna was surprising, and somewhat sad, but it blended well with the fates of the rest; I was very happy indeed over the conclusion of the relationship between Josse and Helewise, about time! If only there were to be more!!!!!!!

last in a series 24 May 2009
By Nancy johns Mohlere - Published on Amazon.com

I have enjoyed all of Alys Clare's novels on Abbess Helewise and Sir Josse. They are believable for the period and well written. I was sorry to see this as the last of the series, but I hope to read more of Ms. Clare's novels on another era.

A lovely finish 3 Sep 2009
By Catscradle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The Joys of My Life is the 12th and final book in the Hawkenlye series. Once again Clare does a fine job weaving her characters into historic events. Her final chapter provides a satisfying ending and a glimpse into the future. I look forward to reading her next historical series.

This was the last book in this series. Author did an excellent job of tying the entire series together. I would strongly recommend Alys Clair's books.
