Biography

With the Washington, D.C.-based Reflux, 7-string guitarist Tosin Abasi caught the attention of discerning fans with fierce riffs and fleet-fingered solos that sharpened the edge of the band’s politically-minded progressive metalcore. The band’s moment in the spotlight was brief, but in that time, the group built a dedicated cult following via extensive touring with the likes of ... Read more in Amazon's Animals as Leaders Store

Product Description

When Tosin Abasi released his debut solo album under the moniker Animals As Leaders in 2009, earning critical acclaim as the lead guitarist in the Washington, D.C. based metalcore act Reflux, it was still a long-shot that an instrumental album of progressive metal with jazz, electronic and ambient flourishes would develop anything more than a cult following. Fast-forward two-plus years to sophomore effort Weightless, Animals As Leaders is revered worldwide as a trailblazing pioneer of modern heavy music. The groups genre-defying compositions have earned extensive praise Steve Vai called the band the future of creative, heavy virtuoso guitar playing. Now in 2014, Animals As Leaders third full-length release marks the recording debut of drummer Matthew Garstka, whose technical proficiency and unique style allows Abasi and guitarist Javier Reyes the room to push their boundaries to previously unthinkable heights. Reyes states: I think some of the new tracks are some of AALs strongest and musical material yet and extremely happy with how the album came out. Everyone who took part with this album (Misha Mansoor (Periphery), Adam Getgood (Periphery), Diego Farias (Volumes), and Navene Koperweis) is extremely talented and I think weve done a great job of capturing it onto what is now the third Animals As Leaders album.

It's quite hard deciding whether I like this one more than their first album. The second album didn't do it for me. But Joy of Motion is an excellent comeback. Full of grooves, jazzy sections, mind-blowing solos, and "thumping" (check out The Woven Web @ 1:30).

This album is so groovy that you'll be headbanging in 7/8 (time sig.) without knowing.

I ripped this to my iTunes using Apple's Lossless Codec to give me the highest bitrate (roughly 1000kbps as opposed to 320kpbs). This is an album that NEEDS to be played in the highest possible quality! (though you need pretty decent speakers/headphones to make the most of it).

Anyways, best 10 quid I've spend on a CD in a looooong while.

Now to wait 3 years for their next album...

This album - the third and latest offering from Tosin Abasi and his jaw-droppingly talented musical cohorts - is nothing short of breathtaking. I won't bore you with a track-for-track review (although Physical Education is a particular highlight for me just now); you can check them all out for yourself, but suffice it to say that the compositions and performances captured on this record are enough to make your nose bleed, your foot tap (if you can figure out the time signatures..!) and your head bang. How do you even conceive complex musical tapestries like these anyway?! I play guitar, but Tosin Abasi is one player who's musical brain-wiring and technique I can scarcely even begin to fathom. Put simply, Animals As Leaders is groove-prog-jazz-fusion-metal at its most genius and expert level of execution. Period. If you're already a fan, you really don't want to leave this one out of your AAL collection. Complete eight-string genius from start to finish.
