Book Description

12 Mar 2001
Gyles n.pl. an obsolete spelling of guiles Brandreth n. a framework for support In The Joy of LEX, Gyles Brandreth lives up to his name by constructing a beguiling book with a framework of chapters ably supporting his contention that 'Words and the way we use them are what make us human animals unique. Or, to quote Bertrand Russell, 'No matter how eloquently a dog may bark, he cannot tell you that his parents were poor but honest.' And words and what we can do with them are what The Joy of Lex is all about. It is a wideranging and light-hearted celebration of our language - the richest, most diverse, most exciting and most entertaining language in the world.' For word buffs, for puzzle lovers, for anagram addicts, for crossword enthusiasts, for Scrabble players, for readers with an eye for the eccentric, and an ear for the unusual, this is the ultimate guide to the lighter side of the English language, written by a seasoned wordsmith and self-confessed verbaholic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Fun 4 Dec 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I picked up the book at the library while browsing through some of the nearby books. This caught my eye because "LEX" is not exactly the most common thing you hear in your daily life. From the first section to the last, I roared with laughter. The funniest part was the section when he took out certain letters from "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and tried to make the story still make sense. When he took out "a" from the poem, it was hilarious to hear that Polly owned some sheep. It was very enjoyable. If you ever want a good laugh with the English language, this is the book to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully funny! 17 Dec 2004
By Snappah De Fish - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I found this book totally by accident and just thumbed to the middle of the book to see what it was like. The next thing I knew, I was standing in the middle of the aisle and laughing out loud at the things I read. I have bought several copies of this book and given to friends because I find it so amusing. I'd recommend this to anyone!
4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, if bit dated 8 May 2012
By Mark Graham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a fun and witty book; available for quite the bargain. It's a tad dated in comments and references, but still entertaining.
