5.0 out of 5 stars Superb music, superb sound quality 22 Nov 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have had 'A Love Supreme' on CD for many years. but always found the sound quality a bit lacking. This was recorded around the same time. It has that same 'spiritual' feel, but it is like they are in the same room!

Jazz music in transition with stunning performances all round... a real landmark recording! I've listened to this CD over and over since buying it and can't recommend it highly enough!

By Jazzrook TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This overlooked studio album was recorded a few months after 'A Love Supreme' on February 17/18, 1965 & May 17, 1965 with John Coltrane(tenor & soprano sax); McCoy Tyner(piano); Jimmy Garrison(bass); Elvin Jones(drums) & Art Davis(bass) on some tracks.
Along with two Coltrane originals, 'Brazilia' and 'Song of Praise', are impressive versions of 'Nature Boy'; the Leslie Bricusse-Anthony Newley show-tune 'Feelin' Good' and 'Chim Chim Cheree' from Mary Poppins which is a soprano outing for Coltrane.
This 1997 remastered edition also includes a bonus version of 'Nature Boy' recorded live at The Village Gate on March 28, 1965.
All in all, 'The John Coltrane Quartet Plays' contains an hour of passionate, spiritual and exploratory jazz which should be heard by anyone who appreciated 'A Love Supreme'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another beauty from Coltrane... 4 April 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you are the sort of Coltrane lover that has albums like `Ole', `Blue Train' and `Ballads' in their collection and are wanting to investigate the more exploratory elements of the great man's work post `A Love Supreme', then `..Plays...' is a very exciting place from which to start your journey. The music is starting to go 'out' but it is still accessible.

Released in 1965 `...Plays...'finds Coltrane in his usual small group setting working his way around an appealing variety of show tunes and originals. Despite the length of the tracks (the majority are well over six minutes long) there is never a feeling of indulgence or tiresome repetition. Highlights to listen out for? the bass intro to `Song of Praise') and the beautiful melodic statements on tracks like `Nature Boy' and `Brazillia' to name but a few. Of course Coltrane plays many a beautiful solo on this album. Sometimes fierce, sometimes gentle and considered but always with a warm thick tone and assurance.

`...Plays...' is worth any jazz lovers time. Recommended.

Chim Chim Cheree is one of my favourite John Coltrane improvisations. Mabe as it is as recognisable in such a different setting. But here the quartet do what John Coltrane musicians do best and deconstruct the recognisable and reform it into improvisation at its best. Edgy but satisfying, I have it on the iPod and it always gives me a blast travelling on the train into work. People probably think, if at all, old geezer listening to talk back radio. Bliss, if they only knew the inside of my skull is being ripped and reordered by a maestro. Ably supported by the usual suspects, McCoy Tyner on ivories, Jimmy garrison-the big stand up four string thingy and battering by Elvin Jones. The rest of this album is none too bad neither.
