Product Description

A bilingual out-of-work British actor is offered a movie role in Germany just before World War Two. His Nazi employers have no idea that he's Jewish as well as British and when war breaks out his fate is inextricably linked to Hitler's favourite, the ice-queen of German cinema Eva Wendt as well as the SS, for whom, as a German movie star, he becomes their poster boy and propaganda puppet.

Moving swiftly from pre-war London through Nazi Germany and spitting out its protagonist into post-war Hollywood, Hillgate's masterpiece is a swift-moving Bildungsroman, an erudite, concise allegory for the hypocrisy inherent in Nazi ideals and superstitions and their failure to overcome the essence of the human spirit.

Meticulously researched and well-presented, based on true events but fictional, this is the story of what could have happened and raises the question of whether or not Hillgate's protagonist has behaved morally, amorally or immorally.

Previously a no.1 on Amazon UK in its genre (spy stories) in May 2007 under the title 'Julius', the film rights of the novel have been optioned and this is a new release exclusively for Kindle, with different artwork and title.

This book comes highly recommended by a number of reviewers in both the United States and Europe.

THE PLOT:
An English actor, unemployed, Jewish, name of Abe Goldstein, gets offered a movie role in Germany just before World War Two, changes his name so the Nazis won't gas him on arrival, falls in love, changes identity again and tries to make it to post-war Hollywood, never losing sight of the woman he loved and who haunts his dreams but hoping at the same time that he can evade those that pursue him because of what he did, for the Germans, during the war.

THE STYLE:
Hillgate pulls you straight into the world of Abe Goldstein and his incredible thirty year journey in a concise but erudite fashion. There is not much here that is predictable and Hillgate moves us seamlessly from one location and set of well-drawn characters to another. We are moved, surprised, then made to laugh, then cry.

THE VERDICT
My book club liked it and we gave it a 'full recommend.' The author agreed to take part in a fascinating discussion with us - on Skype - which was truly excellent.

Five stars.

A fascinating story on an equally fascinating era and subject. The elements of pacing, setting, plot, narrative and description and dialogue are great, making the work a touching page turner that it is. In so many aspects, it brings to mind the book Fortune Calls that highlighted things just before the holocaust. This is a deep story I am glad I read.

I don't usually write a review on anything I buy but for this item I thought I should. This book is very good. It has a great cast of characters, is very well written and really makes you think about what life must have been like for the Jews in Nazi Germany during the war. It is also very well priced 77p is an absolute bargain for the Kindle.

I did however feel that the pace of the book was too quick. There were massive jumps in time firstly from 1939-1944 and then again another jump of some 20 years at the end. What happened in between those years is never properly explained. I also felt the author could have put more detail into the characters especially Eva. Also the plot did seem slightly implausibe as another reviewer has pointed out but most thrillers are. For all that though it is a thoroughly good read and well worth buying.
