Thougt provoking 22 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Have only just completed reading half of this book before being asked to comment, but so far I have found it to be very interesting and thought provoking. Although in my opinion Rex is very biased and a skeptic he has certainly carried out extensive research before writing this book. His insights into what Jesus's ministry was really all about ie in 'caring and sharing' was illuminating, and made me again go back to some of the parables of Jesus and to reconsider the 'Kingdom of God'. It always puzzled me that Jesus never really defined 'The Kingdom' although he did often say what it was like, and then mainly in parables. Rex does a good job in 'enlightening' the reader in this aspect. Do buy this book and make up your own mind about what Jesus really said and why.

Excellent Book 3 Jun 2008
By Andrea Peloso - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The down to earth wisdom in this book will benefit anyone. Weyler places the reader into the 1st century where Greek philosophers and Jewish teachers serve as a rich background for the words of Jesus. The author's analysis of spiritual thought and social movements shine as he relates Jesus' teachings according to popular and more recently discovered texts such as Thomas and Magdalene. As he details the evolution of the Jesus movement into the beginning of the Church one is given the opportunity to see what remains of history as it progresses through the hands of power. I was surprised and inspired to learn the differences in Jesus' teachings in contrast with what I had previously understood. The stories and images that Jesus uses are even more meaningful in their social and historical context. His ideas still offer help for our times. "The Jesus Sayings" is a fascinating and well-researched book that still flows like a great tale. A must for anyone interested in Jesus, social movements, spiritual wisdom, and the beginning of the Christian Church.

An amazing amount of information 15 Jan 2011
By Paul A. Schmidt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is eye opener for both Christians and non-Christians alike. I was raised Catholic but no longer practice and I am not Christian. I don't agree with many teachings and interpretations of the Church and, despite not being Christian, I don't care for the way modern day evangelical Christian organizations taint Christianity and Jesus' life. When I saw the book and read the description I had to get it. This book may either strengthen or weaken a person's faith; in my case it did neither but I now have an incredible amount of respect for the man Jesus was. He was truly brilliant, courageous and compassionate. Whatever your faith, we would all be better by following Jesus' core teachings as outlined in this book.

I appreciate the time and energy Mr. Wyler spent in researching and writing this book and believe this book or it's equivalent should be standard reading for wherever Christianity is taught and practiced or any comparative religion class as well.

A Thoughtful and Objective Quest for the Open-Minded 1 Oct 2010
By Rule 62 Ken - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Rex Weyler tackles a controversial topic and confronts it in a manner that is direct, thorough and logical, though sometimes a tad too pedantic. He is slow to leap to conclusions, which is a testament to his objectivity. This is a constructive review which examines what we know about the message of Jesus Christ, looking at the subject from multiple sources and angles. The author pieces together the clues, carefully sifting through the source of the material, like a forensic scientist, looking at all of the pieces of the puzzle before offering his conclusions. Some of what he concludes may be offensive or objectionable to fundamentalists, but if one reviews his research objectively, there is little to take offense to. Weyler comes up with an interesting analysis of who St. Paul and Mary Magdalene were, based on the fragments of history. He is critical of Popes from the past, and an admirer of St. Francis of Assisi. He offers us an interesting analysis of when the gospels were written, which appear more credible, which appear to be copycats and leaves the reader wondering just how much we really know about who wrote the gospels, and to what degree they were edited along the way, highlighting portions that seem glaringly out of context, as well as some containing language out of sync with its time. He also injects his personal experiences (such as his grandmother's loving kindness and his child's spirit of sweet generosity among the homeless of Vancouver) as a backdrop to show the reader why finding the purity of the original message is important. In some places, this book can be a laborious read, but generally it is manna from heaven to those who are curious and open-minded about learning how the New Testament was written and how it should be viewed today. Weyler takes the reader along on his quest, and for the reader, the journey is a worthwhile one.
