Despite being a sworn atheist I have always been interested in hearing the other side's "evidence", which has usually consisted of a series of self fulfilling prophecies, backed up by nothing more than blind faith. The historical puzzle that is the resurrection of Jesus is the starting point of any sensible debate on the subject. The Christian side of the argument usually relies mainly on faith, the atheist's on scientific evidence, neither of which having much intellectual ballast.

Charles Foster's book is the first of its kind to present a properly researched and clearly argued debate for BOTH sides of the argument. It is brilliant and if you are interested in the puzzle of the resurrection, or you just simply want to gain an insight into the Christian faith then please read this book. I remain an atheist, but this book has forced me to face issues, both historical and theological, that I never thought even existed. A first rate book.

I was attracted to this book as it claimed to present a balanced and objective view on whether or not Jesus Christ died and was resurrected from the dead. I was not disappointed - this book is well researched and full of interesting facts (on both Jesus and the historical scriptures which recorded his fate, as well as the society he lived in at the time). Plus, more importantly, it is presented in an impartial manner, providing well argued views both for and against the resurrection, which leaves you to come to your own conclusions. I liked the way this book was written in an easygoing and often humorous style, which ensured that despite the weighty subject matter, it was definitely not a chore to read. Highly recommended for all those still searching for answers to this highly contentious issue, which never seems to be out of the media these days.

This is an extraordinary achievement: for something that's so well and comprehensively researched it manages to be a remarkably compelling and exhilarating read. If you've read the Da Vinci Code (or haven't) you should consider upgrading to The Jesus Inquest. This guy seems to have covered all the angles surrounding the death and resurrection of the Nazarene - the documentary sources, the medical causes of death, ancient Jewish burial practices, the Turin shroud; and also the various hypotheses about what happened to the body.... and there are PICTURES too. He's obviously done a lot of leg-work around the Middle East to research this. The format of the two barristers, X and Y, arguing their case in court and slagging each other off in their deliciously ungentlemanly way works really well. A great read for people tired of the usual one-sided pro- or anti-Christian fare and who want to get a serious handle on what might actually have happened 2000 years ago, without falling asleep at the wheel. Pugnacious, provocative.... and extremely informative. NICE ONE.
