What If—Your Reality Wasn't Even Real?

New Jersey may be called the Garden State, but Betsey Weisz' future looks so dead it's turning into mulch: her boyfriend is a loser who can't keep a job, her dreams of fashion school have faded away, and she's been trapped behind the cashier's desk at the Free-Way Diner for what's beginning to seem like an eternity.

But that's all about to change when a bolt of cosmic lightning transforms an old man into a monster with a craving for souls—Betsey's in particular. Luckily for her, the spider-demon isn't the only supernatural being who's appeared in the Free-Way.

Enter Matt Zero, the Fool. He's an impossibly handsome stranger who seems to know everything about what's going on, but can't remember anything about his past.

Together Betsey and Matt will have to figure out how to defeat a monster, and escape this collapsing reality. But before she can leave her demons behind Betsey Weisz will need to confront a dark secret buried so deep that it's literally out of this world...

Welcome to Season 00 of The FooL

What If The Only Way To Escape Your Problems Was Jumping Into a Whole New Universe?

Betsey Weisz is a tough-chick from New Jersey who's always relied on herself. But when her darkest fears lurch to life, she discovers that she can't survive without the help of The FooL: an angelic inter-dimensional traveller who can't remember who (or what) he really is.

Now she and Matt Zero leap from one alternate reality to the next, battling demons, dragons, and everything in-between. But if they're ever going to stop running, they'll have to discover the location "The World"—the one place in all the multiverse that they can escape from the cosmic forces that are hunting them down between dimensions.

First they'll need to uncover the truth about who the FooL. But the more they learn about his past, the less Matt wants to know, and the more Betsey finds herself being seduced by the true power of the multiverse.

Featuring a unique cast of characters, wild alternate realities, and a uniquely off-kilter sense of humor, the adventures of Betsey and the FooL will appeal to fans of paranormal romance, urban horror, and cosmic sci-fi. It's an infinite multiverse of action, intrigue, mystery, and humor.

Leap into this mind-blowing fantasy adventure series that will satisfy your itch for supernatural adventure, and leave you wanting more.

Praise for The Fool

Andrew Mayer is to the sci-fantasy genre what Grant Morrison is to comics: at once a mashup of the past and purposeful move onward. Get your dose of 21st Century multiverse right here, from an author who clearly loves playing in this space, and with your mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miéville meets Doctor Who in an original dark fantasy adventure 4 Jun 2014
By Starry Sky - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Fool: Episode 0 is a heady teaser for what I feel certain will be a fantastic (and fantastical) new book (and hopefully series!). With a strong whiff of Doctor Who and a lingering taste of the dark horror fantasy of China Miéville, Mayer creates a world in which everything is in question, especially reality. He plunks the reader into a tacky New Jersey diner with characters whose lives are as congealed as the grease on the food. Then the plot whirls into action like a centrifuge, spinning us off into a situation as terrifying and unthinkable as the diner was familiar. We don’t get a full character arcs in this brief episode, of course, but we learn enough about Betsey Weisz and Matt Zero to know that we want to find out who they really are, what will happen to them next, and how they’ll handle it. My biggest question is whether the Miévillian notes of despair and futility will bear out, or whether the heroic tropes of hope and love found in Mayer’s not-entirely-undark Society of Steam series will get a chance to prevail. Reality may be a thin veneer, but in every possible universe, I’m very excited for the next episode of The Fool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff for Fantasy fans 4 Jun 2014
By Dennis gallagher - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm not typically a fantasy fan - I'm drawn more to hard Sci-Fi but I have to admit this book captured me.

It moves from a quiet opening into definite strangeness. But it is more than strangeness for its own sake. Behind the kalidascope of reality shifts that ensue are intimations of greater worlds and organization, of notions that the world we experience, what ever it might be, is of our own making, and of good and evil forces that manifest as a result of our own intents and fears.

Fantasy fans should love this. And this short volume is, apparently, the beginning of a series. In spite of my bent towards harder Sci-Fi, I know I'll be interested to see the next book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A crazy ride! 8 Jun 2014
By M. Trulson - Published on

Just finished reading The Fool - Episode 0: The Jersey Devil, and I feel like I just got off an exhilarating ride that whisked me through mysterious rooms full of so many things that I wanted to look at that I hoped it would slow down, while also urging it to keep going because I needed to see what was around the next corner. I'm drawn to the characters and look forward to seeing what happens next - I'm intrigued by the mysteries surrounding them, and several times, while doing other things, I found myself thinking about the storyline and the possible reasoning behind how they acted. I really enjoyed this book and am glad the story will continue - hopefully soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Freaky & Funny 13 Jun 2014

As a fan of Andrew Mayer's Society of Steam books I was excited to read his newest book. I wasn't disappointed a bit.

The characters are interesting and gritty and their interactions can go from creepy to hilarious.
The story is a wild roller coaster ride of strangeness and mystery and the young woman - Betsey - and her friends find themselves dropped right into the middle of it.

As long as the occasional strong language and occult themes don't freak you out you will have fun with this wild ride.

I look forward to more books in this series from Andrew Mayer.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect summer reading 13 Jun 2014
By Dahlia Schweitzer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm not going to give away any spoilers here, but some of the twists (including the major one) in this book are mindblowing. Mayer will keep you guessing. I haven't read the Society of Steam trilogy, which he's also written, but that's on my list for this summer. I am not a huge fantasy reader, but all the magic and monsters somehow felt believable to me as I was reading. Looking forward to the next one in this new series. It's not often that I find a kickass female protagonist, but this one is especially compelling.
