Amazon.co.uk Review

Carl Reiner (Where's Poppa?) brought comic Steve Martin to the screen in this mostly funny 1979 movie about a relentlessly stupid but innocent man, whom we get to know from childhood (where it never occurred to him that he was white as he was raised by a family of black sharecroppers) to romance (where he doesn't quite know what to do with Bernadette Peters). Martin is game as the moron, and this is the kind of film with funny moments people still talk about. --Tom Keogh

1 Star Jerks! 16 Mar 2010
I cannot believe this film is getting 1 star reviews, it's hilarious!
What other film features a dog caled S**t head, a car towing a church and cat juggling, this film definitely started a trend of movies that went on into the
80's and beyond and should be given more credit.
If you're a fan of Steve Martin you will love this film, as long as you have more of a sense of humour than some of the 134 year old women that are currently reviewing this film very badly.BE THE JERK.

One of my all time favourite films, I believe It was Steve martins first major film, It is his best performance, It's even better than Man with two brains.

I still remember parts of the film and they still make me laugh even now, such classic songs as "picking out a thermos for you" I still sing it to my wife when we buy a new flask (sad I know).

There are so many memorable parts, I won't spoil the film by mentioning them, buy it (and what a bargain priced) and enjoy Steve Martin at his best playing the innocent fool.

Very funny... 27 Nov 2006
By S J Buck TOP 500 REVIEWER
This is a classic early Steve Martin film that has many very very funny moments. Made in 1979 and directed by Carl Reiner, who Martin would work with again a number of times, this is straightforward wacky comedy.

Martin is basically a complete fool, who is brought up on a plantation but doesn't realise he isn't black. Theres a great sequence where the black family are all singing gospel songs and Steve Martin just can't keep time..... Of course he leaves the family and ventures into the big wide world.

Well worth getting if you like Steve Martins classic early films. This is certainly up there with "All of me" and "The Man with two Brains".
