5.0 out of 5 stars True Giants 30 Jan 2006

I entirely agree with Mr. Waghorn's comments which promted me to re-visit this session (strange that we are almost neighbours). I remember hearing the original 12' L.P. which, I seem to recall, was called "The Jazz Giants of 56", shortly after its release. Being then young and foolish I thought the best track was the up tempo "Gigantic Blues". Now being older and wiser I prefer the other more relaxed titles. Young's powers were beginning to wane in the mid 1950s but there is no sign of it here. He is quite sublime. Eldridge is in tasteful mode although he can't resist a Gillespie quote on the fast "Blues". I have never heard a bad Vic Dickenson solo and the rhythm section swings like mad. The sleeve notes describe Teddy Wilson as curiously neglected. His playing here is an absolute delight. Me thinks I should investigate further. Two final thoughts. As this C.D. is a straight copy of the original L.P. one must assume anything else from the session is long gone. Although I was growing up during the period and am probably biased, I have always thought the 1950s was THE decade in jazz for bop, mainstream, West Coast, big bands etc. This release supports my argument. John. P.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mainstream Classic 27 April 2005
By Waggers

This recording shows master musicians on top of their form with Lester Young particularly in magnificent form, especially on the longer tracks. He is backed by a restrained Eldridge and sympathetic Dickenson and Wilson. The whole group being propelled by luminaries of the Basie rhythm section, playing as one man to keep the backing firm and adhering to the tunes. One would never have known that this was a Norman Granz pickup group the way they play together. Essential late night mainstream music.

5.0 out of 5 stars masterpiece 11 Jun 2008

What a gigantic group!

Still very much in their prime, many of these jazz giants are old musical and personal friends. For instance, Jo Jones (dm) and Freddie Greene (g) were a vital part of Basie's rhythm machine in the hay-day of Young's tenure with the orchestra; Eldridge (tp) and Young both participated in beautiful Teddy Wilson-Billie Holiday recordings, Young made a perfect quartet album with Wilson (p), Ramey (b) and Jones (Pres and Teddy); Jones and Young (at one number joined by Eldridge) were guests on Count Basie rightly famous "At Newport" reunion album (Count Basie at Newport), Roy played with Young on numerous other occasions as well (including JATP encounters and Young's swan song "Laughin' to keep from cryin'"...

Lester Young had some of his peaks in the 50s (check out also his work with Oscar Peterson from the period - With the Oscar Peterson Trio, particularly when surrounded by the likeminded jazz giants of the previous era and Vic Dickenson is another reason to get this gem: he plays really beautifully throughout this fantastic album... If you're into hot and gentle mainstream, into swing, Lester Young, Roy Eldridge, Vic Dickenson...YOU MUST HAVE THIS!

Why did I wait so long to buy it, I keep asking myself in disbelief. Lyrical and ballad-oriented component of this album prevails and, since these artists have beautiful sound, this will make this album quite accessible to audiences who otherwise don't necessarily concentrate on jazz (for instance to the Diana Krall and Norah Jones crowd).

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazz Giants Lester Young 9 Jan 2008
Format:Audio CD
I bought the vinyl in 1973 and have played the two discs regularly ever since. The single CD is faithfully reproduced. This is not jazz for jazz "buffs" only it`s cool cool jazz which, with blinkers off, should appeal to anyone who isn`t totally biased against jazz. It`s cool music played brilliantly by masters and a giant Lester Young)
