HASH(0x8dec4108) out of 5 stars The Hot Winds Strike Again 5 Sept. 2012
By John C. Graham - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Another excellent Marty Grosz and The Hot Winds release from Arbors Records. This time it's the music of James P. Johnson that receives updated arrangements from Marty. The musicians add some wonderfully "hot" solos to the proceedings and different band members sit out on certain numbers to keep it all fresh. Panic Slim even makes an appearance on the last(14)number.

Marty Grosz has continued to play and entertain traditional jazz enthusiasts for somewhere around a half century now. Although the music he plays mostly comes from an even earlier period, it never sounds old, dated or dead. Rather, it sounds bright, alive and vibrant. Having seen(experienced)Marty and his small band(the names frequently change)on a few occasions, I have always come away feeling envigorated and with a smile on my face.

The memory of the band with Bobby Gordon and Peter Ecklund will always remain strong. What a band it was ! This particular band may strike me the same way in years to come. Dan Block and Scott Robinson are back on reeds still packing a powerful punch. Jon-Erik Kellso(my favourite)adds his exquisite trumpet sounds while Vince Giordano is, thank goodness, back on the string bass, tuba and bass sax. Arnie Kinsella, another long time associate, plays the drums and Jim Dapogny adds some absolutely wonderful piano...no James P. clone here.

Marty's voice sounds great -a little weathered in places- and his guitar playing is, as always, a highlight. There are many moments of brilliance on this disc. All of the tunes have much to offer. This is the one that stood out for me this summer. I reached for it regularly with my morning coffee. BUT, unlike my morning coffee, this one will never grow stale. It's one to treasure.
