I wonder if the 3-star average rating these books have been given is because readers are expecting fully fledged Ian Rankin? I'm a Rankin/Rebus fan and have followed his/their career avidly, but what's interesting is the way Ian Rankin has matured and improved as a writer over the years. The Jack Harvey novels are early stuff and you will be disappointed if you're expecting deep psychological dramas of the later Rebus period. They are, however, more than competent, readable, enjoyable thrillers. If you have a long train journey, are in hospital with a broken leg or your flight to Spain is delayed by 6 hours, you will find the time passing effortlessly with these books. There's a high body count, espionage, professional assassins, government security scares, the occasional romance and the added bonus of Rankin's humour and style.
